Description

Fleet Mechanic (Technician II) performs skilled work in the preventative maintenance, diagnosis, repair, overhaul and replacement of parts on county vehicles and heavy equipment to ensure safe and timely repairs in a highly demanding, fast-paced environment in accordance with all local, state and federal regulations and county policies. The Technician II (Fleet Mechanic) is focused on maintenance, diagnosis and repairs on cars, pick-up trucks, and heavy equipment such as excavators, wheel loaders, forklifts, heavy-duty field tractors, mowing & maintenance equipment, sweeper truck, dump trucks, roll-off trucks, semi road tractors, flatbed, dump and walking floor trailers and other types of equipment.

We are looking for a candidate who will provide exemplary service while maintaining first-rate customer relationships, prides themselves on quality, safety and ensuring our work will meet the highest of standards each of our customers deserve. Duties are performed under the general direction of a Fleet Mechanic Supervisor or Fleet Superintendent and are evaluated through periodic inspections of work performed; by accuracy, efficiency and timeliness of tasks completed.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs, oversees and may coordinate the installation, repair, maintenance or replacement of vehicle systems and engine parts.

  • Must be able to multi-task and have excellent diagnostic skills and read, interpret wiring diagrams and hydraulic system flow charts.

  • Diagnose and repair electrical/electronic and multiplexing system failures.

  • Overhaul and replacement of major drive train components such as gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials/power dividers, hydraulic system components, etc.

  • Perform routine brake inspections, replacements and adjustments on commercial vehicles following Federal DOT requirements.

  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic system and electronic hydraulic system malfunctions.

  • Perform road calls, roadside repairs, tire replacements, preventive maintenance and repairs on in-field equipment.

  • Services vehicles, heavy equipment per county maintenance schedules and/or from vehicle, condition reports (VCR) and daily equipment inspection reports (DEIR).

  • Road and/or field test vehicles or equipment to properly identify the malfunction and perform final operational test to quality-check all repairs/maintenance.

  • Assigns projects to subordinates, maintains record of duties performed and equipment used by a staff of mechanics, and approves tasks upon completion.

  • Perform routine metal and aluminum welding, body repairs and component fabrication.

  • May perform all work related to a heavy industrial automotive shop.

  • Perform all mechanical, maintenance duties performed by subordinates on gasoline and diesel engines and related equipment.

  • Create work orders on repairs and services providing legible and accurate information for work performed on paper and computer.

  • Clean and maintain the garages/work areas and equipment.

  • Incumbent may be required to work at various Fleet Maintenance locations within Solid Waste.

  • Understand and follow all safety rules and SOPs and perform preventive maintenance and repairs within industry standard repair times.

Education, Experience, Licensing

  • Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to High School graduation or GED equivalent and two years of related mechanical experience (i.e., maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline-powered equipment and vehicles or heavy industrial automotive, performing in-depth diagnostics, preventive maintenance and mechanical repairs from light to heavy vehicles).

  • Must have complete set of mechanic's hand and pneumatic tools up to 1 " to efficiently perform required maintenance and repairs on county equipment.

  • Possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit and an acceptable driving record at time of offer is required. The ability to obtain a valid Class A CDL with Air Brakes endorsement within 180 days of hire date is required.

  • This is a Safety-Sensitive position subject to Drug and Alcohol Workplace Testing as provided in DOT regulation 49 CFR-Parts 40 and/or 382.

Supplemental Information

  • Ability to lift a minimum of 80 pounds.

  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in Automobile or Medium/Heavy Truck is preferred.

  • Solid knowledge of electrical systems as well as Multiplexing Systems, air systems, chassis and suspension, HVAC, gasoline and diesel engines and transmissions.

  • Must be computer literate and have the ability to operate fleet management and work order-based software programs and related tools.

  • Experience preferred in utilizing diagnostic software programs for Mack, International, Cummins and Ford.

  • Ability to diagnose, locate, define, adjust and/or repair major defects in vehicles and equipment and to make necessary repairs within time limits recognized as industry standards.

  • Excellent in communication with the ability to use prudent judgment and problem-solving skills to make reasonable appropriate decisions and recommendations to work well under pressure in a highly demanding, fast-paced environment that includes deadlines and changing priorities.

  • Workdays are Monday through Friday and rotational Saturdays. Specific hours are dependent on the assigned shift. Must be able to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. Must be able to work flexible hours in emergency situations.
