Summary

Under the supervision of the Coalition Director of the Reading Coalition for Prevention & Support, assists in the implementation of the Coalition’s goals, objectives, and activities. Works closely with coalition staff, police, school and Town departments to expand outreach efforts on substance misuse and mental health promotion within the Town of Reading. Cultivates strong working relationships within the police department and engages stakeholders in broader Reading community. Serves as Health Educator for the coalition. Provides case management for Reading School Chemical Health violations.


Essential Functions

1.Conducts community outreach and responds to inquiries and requests for information and referrals. Provides information, resources, treatment referrals, and training to youth, families, and community members.

2.Cultivates strong working relationships within the police department and in the broader community to promote the coalition’s goals to increase community collaboration, reduce substance misuse and promote mental health.

3.Serves on the Reading Police Department’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Steering Committee and serves as an outreach and referral resource for the CIT program.

4.Coordinates the coalition’s prevention calendar of events including logistics, scheduling and collaboration with stakeholders. Serves as social media manager and communication liaison for the coalition.

5.Leads health education sessions, prevention trainings and programs to address substance misuse prevention and promote mental health within the schools and community including Teen Mental Health First Aid at Reading Memorial High School.

6.Participates in Reading school system’s behavioral health multi-tiered system of support and town stakeholder groups.

7. Advisor for Coalition Youth Leadership groups. Facilitates youth leadership trainings and events.

8.Assists in coordinating programs to promote screening and identification of substance misuse at the middle and high school levels.

9.Provides substance misuse education, risk management and family communication for all Chemical Health violations in collaboration with Reading Memorial High School. Maintains confidential communication with school officials, mental health providers, and others as needed. Provides case management. Maintains all related files and records.

10.Serves as staff liaison to the Reading Coalition Advisory Board including coordination and scheduling of meetings, events and new member onboarding.

11.Acts as Coalition ambassador to local community groups, including participation in development of neighboring coalitions and the Mystic Valley Public Health Coalition, a regional prevention collaborative.

12.Conducts data entry outreach activities and case management into the Coalition Tracking System.

13.Assists in the development of reports and annual evaluation of coalition activities.


Performs other position-related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications


1.Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Health Education, Social Sciences, or a closely related field (Public Health, Psychology); and

2.Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible related experience, preferably in substance abuse prevention, intervention, and treatment; or

3.Any equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience, with additional work experience substituting for the required education on a year for year basis.

Proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole preferred but not required.


Supervisory Responsibility


Provides direct supervision to interns and youth leaders. Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing and selection, training and development, counseling, scheduling, and evaluating performance.


Work Hours

This is a full time position with typical 37.5 hours per week, 8:30am-4:30pm Monday through Friday, with some flexibility in hours to accommodate afterschool, evening, and weekend programming needs.
