Job Description
A private family office based in Chelsea, NY, seeks an experienced Art Archivist / Artist Assistant to maintain, organize, and upload all digital assets of an extensive art collection and photographs into the family office's archives. This role requires collaboration with the direct manager, principals, and artists to ensure proper preservation, organization, and enhancement of the collection. The ideal candidate will have a passion for art, exceptional organizational skills, and a proactive approach to supporting creative projects and archival needs.
Responsibilities
Archival Management
- Catalog and maintain information in the database, including materials, location, reference numbers, and condition notes.
- Upload and organize digital assets, ensuring accuracy and consistency in archival records.
- Assist in prioritizing photo materials for digitization and secure storage to protect collections.
- Edit digital photographs using Adobe Photoshop (e.g., cropping, enhancements, scaling, and lighting).
Artist Assistance
- Provide hands-on support for the artist in studio operations and creative projects.
- Assist in preparing materials for exhibitions, presentations, or family events.
- Select and manage appropriate photographic or art-related materials as needed for various activities.
Procurement & Logistics
- Manage the procurement process for archival materials and assist in purchasing new additions to the collection.
- Coordinate communication, transport, and exchange of materials with galleries, auction houses, or other institutions.
- Ensure the safe handling and relocation of collections as needed.
Collaboration & Improvement
- Work closely with the manager and principals to set goals for improving archival practices and workflows.
- Provide input on enhancing the organization and accessibility of the collection.
Requirements
- 3-5 years in a similar role, managing extensive art collections or working in an artist assistant capacity.
- Bachelor’s degree in Art, Art History, Design, or a related field with a focus on archive and preservation.
- Strong proficiency in Adobe Photoshop; familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Lightroom) is a plus.
- Background in design, photography, or art history with a strong visual sense.
- Knowledge of modern archival theory, standards, and practices.
- Highly detail-oriented and organized, with strong troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to lift and move objects (25-30 lbs).
- Valid U.S. work authorization.
- Excellent references from current and previous employers.
