SVP Pet Sales

Central Garden & Pet is looking for a seasoned consumer products sales professional to lead our Pet sales team.  The Senior Vice President of Pet Sales is responsible for all the brick & mortar customers in the US and Canada for the $1.2B Pet Consumer sales organization. This includes leading the customer facing sales strategy and multi business unit initiatives.  The role is a key member of the Pet Leadership Team, will have six Sales Vice Presidents as direct reports and leads a sales organization of approximately 100 employees. This critical role reports to the President of the Pet Division. It’s critical this world class executive provide leadership to a well-functioning Pet Leadership Team that builds on a customer first culture, driving profitable sales growth that over indexes to category benchmarks.   Partnering with the Pet President and CFO, this position will play a vital role in developing and implementing the strategy for Central’s Pet organization, reducing inefficiency, driving sales and margins while achieve a greater effectiveness in financial management, processes and reporting.  This position is located at our corporate office in Walnut Creek, California, near the Pleasant Hill Bart Station and Iron Horse Trail.

Essential Responsibilities

Team Leadership

  • Establish a robust pipeline of succession candidates to take on new business and backfill key roles.

  • Drive performance of the sales organization – both revenue and margin using well-articulated customer plans that include distribution, shelving, merchandising and planning.

  • Consistently demonstrate, organizational values through behavior and communication that promote a customer-first culture and help develop senior level key customer connectivity.

  • Participate in ensuring Central is an inspiring, challenging and rewarding environment for team members. 

  • Continue to build a highly motivated and strong sales team through innovative and motivating training and development programs.

Executive Management

  • Serve as a member of the Pet leadership team and lead the Pet Sales Organization.

  • Participate in Pet organization key decisions pertaining to strategic initiatives, operating model and operational execution.

  • Engage the Pet Division CFO around financial issues, trends, and changes in pricing and margins.
  • Build effective and highly productive working relationships with each Pet business unit leader that builds the capability of the broader Pet organization.

Strategy, Selling, and Analysis

  • Develop sales strategies and tactics to increase branded sales, market share, revenue and profits.

  • Drive profitable growth and asset management through well curated customer segmentation strategies.

  • Develop sales performance goals, dashboards and incentive systems that motivate and inspire.

  • Lead sales forecasting accuracy for the pet organization in coordination with the business.

  • Develop tools and systems to provide timely customer, sales and margin information to the President and other Leadership Team members, making actionable recommendations on both strategy, marketing and operations. Work with the businesses to develop recovery plans as needed.

  • Assist in establishing periodic dashboards, monthly, quarter, and yearly objectives and KPIs in order to identify opportunities for improvement. This includes both direct analysis of sales results and ad hoc analysis.

  • Direct and coordinate the sales planning and budgeting for the entire Pet organization utilizing corporate planning processes and tools.

  • Lead and/or conduct customer and channel diligence of potential acquisitions and support integration of acquired businesses into the organization.

  • Support overall Digital/eCommerce efforts, partnering with the eCommerce SVP to drive profitable sales in all channels

  • Work closely with marketing, operations and business unit leaders in the successful launch of new products, brand-building activities and other company investments.


  • Experience leading centralized sales teams in a large organization with decentralized and distributed business units.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, good judgment and the capability to influence a diverse range of individuals with a record of developing talent to fill succession roles.

  • A track record driving profitable growth in a +$750mm consumer products business, a team of +50 and with goal of doubling the business in three years.

  • Minimum 15 years successful experience in a fast-paced consumer packaged goods sales and/or retail environment.

  • Demonstrated experience in multi-channel environments.

  • BS/BA degree in business or marketing is required. M.B.A. strongly preferred.

  • Track record of organic and acquisitive growth over-indexing to category.

  • Experience in a consumer products/manufacturing environment.

  • Located in our Walnut Creek, California office with ability to travel 50% to 70% of the time to customers and business units located throughout North America.
