Job Description


The Occupational Health and Safety Technician supports U.S. Air Force operations by performing bioenvironmental engineering activities in the fields of industrial hygiene, occupational health, radiological health and environmental health.  This position helps to ensure that healthy working conditions / standards are maintained and that the environment is not adversely affected by Air Force (AF) operations.


Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Performs workplace industrial hygiene surveys assessing all occupational, environmental, and radiological health hazards. 

Provides staff with technical data and completed forms / documentation for inclusion into occupational/environmental / radiological health program files.  Enters data into the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System (DOEHRS) in accordance with local procedures and Air Force requirements.

Inspects, tests and evaluates workplace environments, equipment and practices to ensure all applicable standards and government regulations are in accordance with AF requirements.  Includes sample collection and survey measurements of potential hazards and engineering controls.

Recommends health hazard controls to mitigate hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions or equipment.

Assists staff in monitoring environmental conditions related to installations, which includes collection of water samples for compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act, swimming pool and bathing area water quality evaluations / program compliance, and occupational and environmental health site assessment samplings.

Demonstrates to workplaces the correct use of personal protective equipment and other health hazard controls.

Provides training and performs fit-testing on respiratory protection devices, which includes gas-mask fit-testing.

Investigates occupational illnesses and injuries to identify why they happened and how they might be prevented in the future. 

Performs evaluations for compliance with fetal protection requirements.

Reviews hazardous materials requests, plans, work orders, contracts and specifications for compliance with environmental and occupational health directives.

Serves as a member on committees for occupational health and environmental protection matters.

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.  Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers.  Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources.  Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.


Associate’s degree in Occupational Health / Safety, Core Science, Engineering Technology or a related field of study and a minimum of two (2) years relevant experience in an Occupational Health or Industrial Hygiene related medical field; or equivalent combination of education / experience (i.e., formal college / vocational school education, active Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST) or Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) certification).

One year experience using basic sampling equipment, which includes detection tubes / chips, personal air samplers and calibrators, sound level meters, noise dosimeters and environmental sampling equipment is required.

The Government will provide on-the-job training covering the protocols and policies within the first two months of the start date.  After completion of the training, the individual will be required to independently function in this position and meet all performance expectations.  Competency is at the sole discretion of the Government.  


Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST) or Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) certification with required education / training, in lieu of experience requirement

Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator certification

Basic Life Support-Provider (BLS)


Practical knowledge of occupational safety and health principles, methods, standards, regulations, policies and procedures applicable to the military or industrial work environment

Working knowledge and understanding of pertinent federal regulations in the workplace, including OSHA standards

Knowledge of hazard identification, risk assessment, and prioritization procedures used to eliminate or control hazards

Knowledge of methods and techniques needed to develop and present safety instruction for different levels of management, supervision and employees

Knowledgeable in the proper selection of personnel protective equipment (PPE)

Ability to operate standard office equipment such as computers, typewriters, copiers, fax machines, telephone systems and office automations systems

Skilled proficiency in the use of Microsoft Windows and Office programs (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.)

Ability to plan, organize, schedule, and coordinate activities such as appointments, meetings, and suspense timelines

Proficient in general medical ethics and telephone etiquette

Excellent verbal and written communications skills with ability to prepare written documents and reports

Knowledgeable and proficient in the use of the English language as to professional business grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization in the preparation of correspondence, reports and presentations

Exceptional customer service skills

Excellent organization, critical thinking and problem-solving skills

Knowledge of safe work behaviors with ability to report unsafe working conditions and behavior

Ability to interact, demonstrate tact and communicate effectively at all levels and across diverse cultures in a variety of situations

Ability to work effectively both individually and in a team environment



This position requires having the following immunizations, with accompanying proof copies of such records, prior to an offer of employment.  The responsibility of purchasing these immunizations and/or gathering these records is the responsibility of each interested candidate.

TB Skin Test with negative results (if positive, proof of negative chest results within the past 12 months)





Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.


Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.


Physical demands include walking, standing, sitting, bending and carrying of light items up to 35 pounds. Travel to other sections of the MTF or Air Force Base may be required.  This includes areas near the base that may be the responsibility of the medical group.  Must be able to stand on feet for long periods of time and to walk on a regular basis.

May be exposed to operating machinery, adverse weather conditions, hazardous materials, radiation, flammable substances and explosives.  Protective equipment is often required when performing inspections.  May have exposure to communicable illnesses.



Ability to see close (20 inches or less), distance (20 feet or more), color (identify and distinguish), peripheral (up/down and left/right with eyes fixed on given point), depth (distances and spatial relationships) and adjust focus (adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
