Senior Technical Leader - Power System Analysis with Security Clearance

Job Description
If you are looking for an opportunity to use your knowledge and expertise in electric power systems to solve some of the world's most challenging national security problems this job is for you! This position will support a wide variety of R&D projects within EPRI with an emphasis on projects that support national security. Areas of responsibility may include performing steady-state and time-domain analysis of power systems, power quality analysis, root cause analysis, analysis of protection and control systems and applying advanced analytical techniques such as AI to solve complex power systems related problems. Areas of responsibility may include performing steady-state and time-domain analysis of power systems, power quality analysis, root cause analysis, analysis of protection and control systems and applying advanced analytical techniques such as AI to solve complex power systems related problems. This position will not have direct people management responsibilities but will be responsible for mentoring the development of other technical staff. The Senior Technical Leader will plan, design, and control the progress of complex research activities to meet objectives as well as prepare and effectively present research reports and results. Job Responsibilities - Manages small to medium level projects without direct people management responsibilities.
- Assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives or problems where the relationships between cause and effect are difficult to establish and little or no precedence exists, and the use of creative imaginative thinking is required.
- Influences project teams in the engineering aspects of the technical work.
- Provides input into configuration management and documentation for engineer related projects.
- Leads proposal efforts and new promotional work.
- Maintains familiarity with the progress and problems in assigned technical areas.
- Prepares proposals, technical publications, and delivers presentations.
- Leads national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, academia, and research organizations.
- Works independently on technical activities without direct supervision Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required
- Masters degree or higher in electrical engineering preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- 8-10 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience.
- Ability to recognize strategic issues and build collaborative projects.
- Required limited supervision and guidance
- Responsible for the success of individual projects
- Works closely with members, contractors, staff to manage projects
- Experience in successful proposal preparation, and marketing activities.
- Manages multiple projects
- Responsible for project budgets, schedules, deliverables, and technology transfer
- Shows maturity of technical expertise and assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives

- Increasing technical depth/breadth to become a subject matter expert The ideal candidate would have:
1. a Masters degree or higher in electrical engineering with 7+ years of experience in electric power systems analysis with 2+ years of relevant software development experience. Applicants with more or less experience will also be considered. 2. Strong power systems analysis background with experience developing complex power systems models and performing simulations such as switching transients, lightning transients and transient stability analysis. 3. Knowledge of three-phase and N-phase power system models and analysis techniques (steady-state and time-domain). 4. Experience using EPRI’s open-source Distribution System Simulator (Open DSS) tool. Experience using Open DSS in advanced applications a plus. 5. Expertise in time-domain simulation techniques, creating power system models in software tools like the electromagnetics transients program (EMTP) for a myriad of frequency ranges (low frequency to high frequency transients) and performing various time-domain studies (switching, lightning, etc.). 6. Experience using commercial power system analysis tools such as PSS/E, PSLF, PowerWorld, etc. 7. Experience and expertise in developing MATLAB or Python scripts to solve difficult problems such as time-domain power system analysis, power quality analysis, signal processing and digital filter design, artificial intelligence and machine learning, etc. 8. Working knowledge or protection and control systems used in electric utility applications. 9. Knowledge of power system operation and the various types of equipment used in substations and generating facilities. 10. Ability to work independently, but also collaboratively within cross-cutting R&D project teams. 11. U.S. citizenship with ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a national security clearance. Having an existing security clearance is a plus.
