Tetra Tech, Inc., currently seeks enthusiastic and experienced Field Crew Leader to assist with vegetation and soils monitoring throughout Nevada Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands and potentially other areas in the western US. Applicants must be willing to commit to the position from April 2019 to February 2020.  Salary is between $18-$19.00 per hour, depending on experience and per diem.

  • Monitoring will follow established BLM protocols and training will be provided

  • The Crew Lead will coordinate with the Project Manager on logistics to ensure that project timelines and budgets are met

  • The Crew Lead will be responsible for daily safety briefings and ensure that all project field data are transmitted to the Project Manager

  • This position requires extensive travel during the field season, with overnight travel for up to 8-10 days anticipated

  • Camping in remote areas for up to 8 days anticipated

  • The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude and demonstrated plant taxonomic skills with flora of the sagebrush, shrubland, and grassland ecosystems of the Great Basin and Mohave desert

  • Experience conducting field work, including monitoring, URL blocked - click to apply, hiking in remote areas, and camping, is preferred

  • Following fieldwork office tasks will include data entry and management and assisting with report preparation


  • Bachelor’s degree in botany, ecology, biology, or related field, or working toward this type of degree with a minimum of 12 semester hours as indicated above

  • A strong background of coursework and/or experience in botany, soils, ecology and conducting field work is important

  • Must have a minimum of 12 semester hours or technical courses in the area of plant identification, botany, soils, rangeland plants, agriculture, or crop science

  • Staff performing surveys must be able to identify and key out sagebrush-steppe plant species and (and habitats) found in the Great Basin, and specifically southwestern Idaho

  • Must also have knowledge of rangeland ecosystems and soils

  • Attention to detail, ability to work independently, willingness to work as part of team, and the ability to stay positive and effective during long days in the field are critical

  • Applicants must be willing to work in sometimes difficult conditions, and often miles from the truck

  • Physical challenges typically encountered may include long off trail hikes, steep slopes, snakes, ticks, 4X4 roads, and extremes of hot and cold

  • The successful applicant will be safety conscience, and continually assess ways to mitigate hazards

  • Applicant must possess a valid driver’s license and have experience driving a four-wheel drive pickup truck on rough terrain



  • Knowledge and/or experience identifying plants, soils, and conducting and leading field work

  • Knowledge and/or experience leading botanical and soil surveys and a variety of vegetation sampling techniques such as line-point intercept and other BLM AIM core methods

  • Experience with electronic field data collection devices and software (GPS units, handheld tablets and ArcCollector for GIS)

  • Ability to use standard office software (excel, word, etc) and report writing

  • Experience with other natural resources surveys (wildlife surveys, wetland delineations) a plus

  • Attention to detail and good communication skills, including oral and written

  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and enjoy working outdoors

  • Experience operating ATVs or UTVs and towing a trailer a plus
