School Crossing Guard - Non-Merit (Cockeysville Location)

Baltimore County, MD Cockeysville, MD (Onsite) Full-Time
Regular Schedule:10 hours per week (approximately 2 hours per day)during the school year (August to June).

ONLY Non-Merit (Part-time) vacancies exist in the Police Department for these positions.

Non-Merit positions are not classified within the Baltimore County Government Classification and Compensation Plan.

A list of eligible applicants will be established based on the examination as outlined below.

Examples of Duties

Under general supervision, controls vehicular traffic and pedestrian movement at designated intersections and crossings. Supervision is received through periodic checks by police personnel at the assigned work location.

* Uses clearly defined guidelines in the form of traffic laws and department standard operating procedures and rules and regulations.
* Determines the safest times to place children in crosswalks with the least disruption of vehicular traffic.
* Directs the coordinated, safe movement of school children and other pedestrians to cross streets.
* Provides direct, routine assistance to pedestrians at busy intersections.
* Issues instructions such as when to proceed or stop by using voice commands and arm and hand signals.
* Provides assistance with pedestrian traffic at large gatherings such as fairs and parades.
* Responds to routine questions and provides information to school children, parents and motorists.
* Reports children and motorists who do not obey instructions to school officials.
* Reports accidents, hazardous conditions, and motorists who violate laws governing traffic in or near crosswalks to police officials.
* Testifies in court regarding such violations.
* Controls traffic at crossings from either the curbside or the street, consistent with the safety of all concerned.
* Looks at traffic patterns to determine when to place children in crosswalks.
* Ensures the safe crossing of children with the least disruption of vehicular traffic.
* Attends meetings, training courses, or perform other related assignments as required.

Qualifications

You must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment and must have access to a means of transportation to and fromassigned work locations.

You must have the ability to read, write and speak the English language. You must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions. You must work in all weather conditions andwalk and stand for extended periods. No previousschool guard experience is required.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE

Applications will be reviewed by the Police DepartmentSchool Crossing Guard Team.

If you are selected for an interview the Police Department will contact you.

Conditions of Employment

Employees must be able to pass initial training provided by the Police Department and demonstrate the ability to perform the required audio and visual signals necessary to control traffic.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

The work of this classification frequently requires walking and standing for long periods of time, traveling between work sites, exposure to motor vehicle traffic, and adverse weather conditions.

Persons in this classification will work an average often hours per week (approximately 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour at the end of the school day) during the school year 10 months (August to June).

A limited number of summer school positions may be available at various times from June to August for established School Guards.

Employees use equipment consisting of a whistle, hand held stop sign, and flares, andare required to wear a uniform.

Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation

Applicants selected for an appointment to a position in Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination and drug screen and an employment background investigation, including, but not limited to a criminal background, education, and fingerprint check.
