Head of Medical Operations & Excellence

The Medical Operations and Excellence Head (MOE) in the Company Pasteur North America (NA) Medical function will report directly to the Regional Medical Head of NA.

The position is based in Swiftwater, PA.


You will have a significant strategic role to develop and implement critical projects as well as take a leadership role in managing the medical operations team.

You will lead a team of personnel in the medical operations and excellence department with whom you will provide operational support and oversee the planning and tactical execution of medical plans within the US Medical department. You will interact with multiple functions within Medical (North America Medical, Global Vaccine Epidemiology and Modeling, Global Medical Strategy, Global Medical Effectiveness Department, and others) and cross-functional departments including, R&D/Clinical Development, Commercial, Public Affairs, Legal, Regulatory Affairs, and other departments.

You will take a strategic leadership position and drive critical operational aspects of the Regional Medical Head’s position, including organization of North American leadership meetings, regional US/Canadian team meetings, and core US and NA Medical strategic initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and Oversee Medical Department operations team to support the execution of the NA Medical strategic roadmap

  • Member of the NA medical leadership team (LT)
  • Provide strategic leadership to the medical operations team to oversee and support execution of the medical strategies and tactics
  • Ensure alignment of the overall US medical strategy and strategic priorities across each of the different franchises and products
  • Provide operational support to the Medical team for timely creation, implementation, and update of product IMAPs (Integrated Medical Action Plans) and deliverables (advisory board development, KOL engagement plan, scientific communication strategy plan)
  • Ensure tactics are strategically aligned with budget, Medical Plan, etc. and support the execution of the US Medical Roadmap through monitoring of related Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Set up and maintain alignment with NA Medical leadership on key priorities throughout the year and drive the department’s agenda in line with the Medical strategic priorities; ensure action item follow-up after the key meetings
  • Lead and manage the Regional Medical Governance Officer who is tasked with oversight, implementation, and compliance of the external expert engagement process; monitor high standards and consistency in quality and internal controls that are applicable to medical activities; and develop and operationalize SOPs for streamlined execution across functions for medical activities (e.g., external expert engagement, Continuing Medical Education Grants, Ad board implementation, and others)
  • Management oversight of the Medical Operations team to ensure consistency and optimal performance through appropriate metrics, communicate program status through dashboards and other reporting materials, and proactively identify issues/delays
  • Support the NA Medical Head in planning, overseeing, and following-up the US Medical budget and resources
  • Direct management of Clinical Operations team members (i.e., Administrative Coordinators, Medical Specialist, Biostatistician) and the Regional Medical Governance Officer, and indirect management of Clinical Program Managers and Medical Writers

Organize and support decision making and information sharing within NA Medical and cross-functionally with other teams

  • Take a leadership role in managing critical operational aspects of the NA Regional Medical Head’s role, including LT meetings, regional US/Canadian team meetings, and core global initiatives; ensures decisions are acted upon and executed in a timely manner
  • Supports NA Medical Head in facilitating LT & other senior management stakeholder decision making and process implementation
  • Provide operational support to NA Medical Head and his/her leadership team to help ensure strong collaboration, alignment, and information sharing
  • Responsible for prioritization, coordination, and project management of transversal projects and ensure knowledge sharing and alignment, whether franchise/product-team specific or across teams
  • Liaise with Global Medical function team, coordinate and facilitate key SP Medical priority projects such as Medical training, Big Data, Digital initiatives, Medical Transformation, Key Catalyst Initiatives (i.e., MEDx, Unified Voices, iNVent, Talent in Motion, and Simplification), and other projects in US
  • Work closely with the NA Medical Head and Global Medical team to embed digital and strategic mindset within the US Medical community, ensure people development plan, training and medical capabilities
  • Drive the enhancement of digital transformation by supporting implementation of digital projects and giving support to the Medical team
  • Build relationships with R&D, new vaccines, and Clinical Development teams across different Franchises to improve Medical input to the strategic plans for new product development and clinical studies
  • Explore digital tools that can improve Way We Work and Simplification within the Medical Function (e.g., workshop facilitation and share-point optimization)
  • Take the lead in developing materials (slides and other documents, as needed) to communicate NA Medical positions to senior leadership, including the Executive Vice President of SP, NA Chief Commercial Officer, and Head of Global Medical Vaccines


Experiences and specific knowledge requirements

  • At least 5-7 years of professional experience in Pharma
  • Post-bachelor degree from an accredited college or university (scientific degree preferred)
  • Track record of successful project management experience
  • Global multi-cultural experience preferred
