Environmental Affairs Specialist

The Environmental Affairs Specialist provides support for the corporate environmental and compliance programs for the Environmental Solutions and Services business unit. Overall purpose of the department is to assure the hazardous waste management and transportation operations are conducted in compliance with and the applicable laws and standards.

PRIMARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepare internal and external environmental reports as required by company policy and/or federal/state regulations. Reports may include Hazardous Waste Biennial Report, ODS Import Reports, Benzene/NESHAP TAB Calculations, TRI Report and the Veolia Global Environmental Report.
  • Manage the ESS Internal Audit Program and participate in Internal Audits as necessary.
  • Coordinate implementation of the ESS Facility Request System (Third-Party Facility Audits) and conduct facility audits as necessary.
  • Provide direct assistance to the EHS Branch Managers to support their compliance programs pertaining to environmental, health and safety, and transportation regulations.
  • Respond to customer audit questionnaires as directed.
  • Respond to customer regulatory questions (environment, health and safety, and transportation)
  • Provide the Environmental Director with establishing and maintaining ESS environmental policies and procedures.
  • Assist branches in performing RCAs and corrective actions related to identified non-compliance issues.
  • Assist branches in developing, implementing and auditing quality programs including ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, and Responsible Recycling programs.
  • Monitor regulatory actions (final rules, proposed rules, notices of proposed rulemakings) and create summaries of these regulatory actions that impact ESS business operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience Background
  • Bachelors degree in Environmental Sciences or related Degree
  • At least 6 years experience in the environmental, health and safety, and transportation regulatory program management preferred
  • Knowledge and experience in the management of hazardous wastes required

The job holder must be able to travel to Veolia facilities, customer locations, and third party facilities to perform work and conduct audits. Travel up to 40%. Ability to work in industrial hazardous waste settings. Ability to wear an air purifying respirator. Ability to spend extended hours working at a desk at his/her computer.
