Position Title: Operations Manager

Corps/Department: Salvation Army, King’s Lake Camp

Reports To: Divisional Youth & Candidates Secretary (DYCS)

FLSA Status: Full-Time; Exempt

Scope of Position: Under the supervision of the Divisional Youth and Candidates Secretary (DYCS), the Operations Manager lives on-site at King’s Lake Camp. Primary responsibilities include the administration, stewardship, and maintenance of the camp property and facilities. This position also serves as a liaison for the camp concerning emergency disaster needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred but not required) in a related field, with three years of experience in camp administration in a primary leadership role.
  • Proficiency in the use of personal computers and Microsoft Office Suite, office equipment, budget, and recordkeeping processes.
  • Proficiency in the use of maintenance tools, power tools, and equipment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work with minimal supervision; ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and respond to crises calmly and effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written formats with all levels of management, co-workers, clients, vendors, volunteers, and visitors.
  • A heart for ministry with a commitment to the policies and principles of The Salvation Army; a uniformed Salvationist in good standing is desired.
  • Current Alaska driver’s license and an acceptable criminal history and driving record; certification in CPR and First Aid is preferred.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversees the upkeep and maintenance of all camp vehicles; purchases equipment and supplies as authorized by supervisor.
  • Ensures cleanliness and readiness of camp prior to arrival of rental groups or internal groups.
  • Provides for needed maintenance, repairs, janitorial services, and security throughout each rental group’s stay.
  • Performs the checkout process before each rental group’s stay, checking buildings and property for cleanliness and damages, reporting to the DYCS, and undertaking repairs where possible.
  • Ensures cleanup of camp facilities immediately following rental group departures.
  • Oversees kitchen setup, maintenance, and preparations for the summer camp season.
  • Handles reporting needs as required by DHQ, including maintaining an inventory of equipment, materials, supplies, and furnishings.
  • Weekly inspects and identifies needed repairs; submits repair list to DYCS for follow-up.
  • Performs well water tests as required by the State of Alaska in a thorough and timely manner.
  • Keeps camp roads, trails, and outdoor activity spots clear of downed trees and other blockages; keeps driveways and parking areas plowed during the winter.
  • Collaborates with DYCS to develop new outdoor activities for summer camp and rentals; may develop and maintain creation care learning strategies and stations.
  • Collaborates with DHQ to address funding for capital improvements, program, and operation endowments.
  • Collaborates with the DYCS on the annual King’s Lake Camp budget, monitors fiscal condition through monthly financial reports, and responds to income shortfalls and/or expense averages.
  • Assists DHQ with reviewing and revising the King’s Lake Camp master plan by helping to define goals.
  • Maintains knowledge of current laws and legislative issues affecting children or the camp’s ability to operate and makes recommendations to DYCS for response and action.
  • Reports to supervisor to discuss any personnel/volunteer issues and/or concerns.
  • Provides in-service training to camp staff regarding camp operations and safety.
  • May be called upon to assist Divisional Emergency Disaster Services, should the need arise.
  • Participates in the King’s Lake Council meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment: Work is performed in both an indoor office environment and an outdoor camp environment. Noise levels may increase due to ongoing youth activities or the use of equipment. The position requires the employee to live on-site at the camp. The employee must be available to respond to emergencies and be accessible by cellular phone. Personal protective equipment must be worn when handling lawn chemicals, cleaning products, and petroleum products.

Physical Demands: Ability to speak, sit, walk, stand, bend, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent basis; to grasp, reach, handle, finger, push or pull objects. Ability to walk over uneven surfaces, climb ladders and stairs. Hearing and vision acuity at or corrected to within normal levels. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., or more with assistance. Ability to operate a motor vehicle in varying conditions.

Language Skills: Must be able to understand, follow, and give both written and oral instructions and be comfortable working with diverse individuals in face-to-face contact and over the telephone.

Mathematical Skills: Must be able to perform simple calculations and apply concepts such as ratios and percentages in practical situations.

Performance Skills: Must be punctual, organized, self-motivated, flexible, and possess a desire to learn and assist those he/she interacts with.

Driver Requirements: Must be a licensed driver with an acceptable driving history. Must also complete and pass The Salvation Army Driver Safety Course.
