Job Description

This position is responsible for management of the University’s high-performance research computing functions. This position provides infrastructure support for the high performance computing cluster and develops structure to manage resource demand growth. Additionally, this position will provide consultation and support to Boston College faculty and principal investigators’ research computing project needs. Provides faculty and their research groups with consulting, user support, and training in relevant applications and tools, sharing expertise and support for research design, analysis, and grants. Supports users of research facilities and assists with managing, analyzing and producing projects.

Key Job Functions:

Research computing: Under direction, provide management over research computing functions within the group. Provide infrastructure support for the high performance computing cluster and develop a structure to manage resource demand growth. Work with ITS leadership to secure funding for upgrades and expansions of the HPC infrastructure and storage. Lead the process of acquisition of HPC equipment. Initiate and manage projects for improving the user and administration experience. Oversee the work of user support staff and provide hands-on assistance as needed. Work closely with HPC system administration staff. Communicate with users and liaise with the cluster governance committee.

Unix/Linux system administration: Oversee the work of the unix/linux research systems administrators and perform system administration tasks, including hardware management, as needed. Oversee and actively participate in the process of integrating instrumentation storage to the HPC infrastructure. Liaise with other ITS units to facilitate integration. Provide on-site system administration and technical support to the Boston College Core Facilities as needed. Coordinate upgrades to existing virtual and physical infrastructure with other units at ITS.

Research consulting/analysis: Provide faculty and their research groups with consulting, user support, and training in relevant applications and tools. Provide expertise and support for research design, analysis, grants, and large statistical and/or geospatial datasets. Design and implement long-term quantitative initiatives to support research projects at Boston College. May be published for the statistical analysis on specified grants. Support users of research facilities and assist with managing, analyzing and producing projects with statistical and/or geospatial datasets. Support users with computation and computation-related research.

Documentation and training: Develop documentation and training materials. Conduct tutorials and workshops and deliver lectures for the entire research community to include faculty and graduate student consultants on research- and computation-related methods and the use of related software. Ensure that appropriate departments are aware of the support resources provided by Research Services. Represent ITS to other University areas to effectively communicate the availability of research support resources to the research community.

Emerging Technologies: Monitor and stay current with trends in research computing, such as container technology, machine learning, and artificial intelligence as well as cluster management and user experience software.

Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $105,000 to $131,250; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

• Minimum of three years (Ph.D.) OR four years (Masters’ degree) of experience in an academic or research environment providing advanced statistical/analytical consultation.

Requirements

• Ability to work with faculty and researchers to address their research technology needs.

• Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills to include presentation skills.

• A minimum of one year of experience supervising a research computing group.

• Experience with HPC systems administration and database administration.

• Able to utilize statistical computing languages including R or SAS; Linux or Unix; develop complex SQL queries to extract information from databases; knowledge of standard statistical methods.

• May be required to work additional hours to meet project/unit deadlines and timeframes.
