The primary function is to implement the nursing process in providing direct patient care to infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and gerontological patients in Phase I and Phase II recovery. The Staff RN assesses perioperative patients and plans, implements, and evaluates nursing activities according to standards of care and practice of BAMC and the American Society of Perianesthesia Nursing (ASPAN) and Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN). This position will float between Phase I recovery and Phase 2 recovery or Presurgical Services.
Assesses the physiological and psychosocial status of perioperative patients in the preoperative and postoperative phases.
Establishes an outcome oriented plan of care based on nursing diagnosis.
Implements nursing interventions according to the prescribed plan:
Anticipates patient needs in the pre and postoperative phases.
Reviews results of diagnostic studies and reports deviations appropriately.
Monitors patient’s physiological status and maintains or improve functions.
Promotes physical comfort and provides emotional support and safety for the patient.
Provides verbal and/or written instructions for pre and post operative patients based on identified needs using understandable and correct terminology.
Maintains patency of tubes and catheters.
Monitors intake and output.
Administers medications according to hospital policies.
Provides age appropriate care for all age groups.
Communicates results of nursing interventions to all appropriate persons to assure continuity of care.Evaluates nursing actions and communicates and clearly documents patient experience.
Adheres to JCAHO professional standards and BAMC policies and procedures.
Attends inservice training sessions as directed.
Restocks and organizes supplies and equipment for holding area and post anesthesia recovery.
Must be able to complete physical, sensory, and mental requirements of the position.
• Supports and adheres to the seven service care standards.
• Participates in performance improvement activities.
• Additional duties as may be assigned by your supervisor and/or director.
Current registration in Wisconsin.
Able to provide emergency coverage on a shared call basis 24 hours/day, 7 days/week within 30 minutes.
American Heart Association BCLS, ACLS, and PALS required.
Conscious Sedation and Basic Airway Management Competency within 3 months of hire.
Previous experiences in Phase I recovery or critical care experience required.
Must have high energy level with ability to work under stress of the perioperative atmosphere and exhibit emotional maturity, stability, and flexibility.
Potential exposure to Latex products, blood borne pathogens, hazardous materials, and communicable diseases. Exposure to body fluids, human tissue, contagious diseases, and sharps as well as unpleasant sights, odors, and materials. Exposure to electrical current. Environment is climate controlled.
