Vice President, Media Relations Strategy

The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. We are currently seeking a Vice President of Media Relations and Strategy for our Washington, DC office.This position is a hybrid role (three days in the office, two days working remote).

Starting base salary = $197,000 - $245,000 a year (commensurate with related experience).

The Vice President of Media Relations and Strategy leads the association’s media team and is responsible for creating and implementing strategic media relations/communications plans in support of the AHA’s strategic plan. The person is part of a collaborative communications team working closely with senior leaders across the association to enhance public awareness of the AHA, its positions and its members. The Vice President of Media Relations and Strategy serves as a spokesperson for the association and works to develop spokespeople for specific issue areas.

  1. Provide strategic direction in crafting creative media strategies that advance the issues and positions of the association.
    • Serve as a spokesperson on behalf of the association and the members AHA represents.

    • Oversee numerous inquiries from high-profile national, local and trade media in a high-stakes environment.

    • Respond in an accurate and timely manner, exercising good independent judgment and discretion at all times.

    • Build and maintain relationships with national, regional and state.

    • Write statements, news releases, talking points and other materials on the AHA.

    • Draft and place op-eds, advertorials and thought-leadership pieces from AHA leaders in prominent media outlets.

    • Prepare AHA leadership team, senior staff, board members and members for national and local TV, print and radio media interviews.

    • Responsible for overseeing, planning and implementing association media events.

    • Oversee pressroom and all media activities surrounding key AHA events.

    • Provide crisis communications counsel for the association.

  2. Provide day-to-day oversight and management of the media relations team.
    • Engage and develop team of media relations professionals.

    • Develop issue beats for each media relations team member, and facilitate collaboration with issue experts.

    • Set clear performance expectations for the media relations team to ensure team meets high standards for accuracy, timeliness and creativity.

    • Develop metrics for tracking media reach and report those to communications and AHA leadership.

    • Be a role model of ongoing professional learning and development.

  3. Strengthen and foster relationships with outside stakeholders such as national hospital organizations and other health related organizations to advance the AHA's strategic goals.
    • Serve as the lead conduit for the state association public relations executives to support major media issues/initiatives.

    • Play a key role in AHA’s campaign to demonstrate the value that hospitals and health systems play in our society.

    • Develop partnerships with other organizations on specific issue areas to advance key strategic priorities for the association.
