Principal R&D Engineer

Apollo Endosurgery, Inc. Austin, TX (On Site) Full-Time
SUMMARY: Apollo's Principal R&D Engineer will be a project leader and team expert in the design and development of innovative medical devices, including both existing devices and new product development.


* Identify design / performance requirements for endoscopic therapeutic devices and systems
* Development and maintenance of best design practices for the Research & Development team
* Modeling and detailing of therapeutic device designs utilizing SolidWorks design software
* Set the direction and manage the workflow of other engineers within the scope of assigned projects
* Interface with clinical advisors to evaluate and optimize new product concepts
* Utilization / Management of Design Controls including the mentoring of others in the use of design excellence tools
* Technical documentation writing as needed
* Leading cross-functional teams to develop new products as well as address design issues / maintenance of existing products and processes.
* Demonstrate expertise in all aspects of applicable surgical procedures in order to develop innovative solutions to solve / satisfy customer needs
* Develop and manage project plans and timelines within the scope of new product development guidelines
* Establish and maintain industry relationships in order to recognize and anticipate industry trends and user needs
* Other duties as assigned


* Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in an Engineering discipline with 10+ years of experience in the medical device engineering/medical device manufacturing industry, or a combination of education and directly related professional R&D experience in the medical device industry
* Expertise in the design of flexible instruments preferred
* Proven track record in new product development and innovation
* Demonstrated experience leading complex medical device product developments from concept through launch
* Expertise in design controls within a regulated industry
* Experience with a parametric CAD design package, SolidWorks preferred
* Innovative problem solver with ability to work independently and in a team environment to plan and achieve aggressive goals
* Strong written and oral communication in English
* Demonstrated success working with a sense of urgency and personal ownership to meet company timelines and objectives
* Ability to travel intermittently to meet the needs of the business
