Managing Director, Senior PR Writer

Truth Initiative is looking for an outstanding strategic communicator to be part of its Communications Expertise Center dedicated to advancing the organization’s mission through robust communications, promotions and thought leadership on tobacco control and public health issues. The ideal candidate will be an exceptional writer/editor who has experience in developing and implementing strategic communications initiatives. They have a strong grasp of the current media landscape and are adept at writing rapid responses including press releases and statements in a newsroom-style environment. The ideal candidate will also identify potential crisis communications situations, create potential responses, and maintain a strong crisis communications protocol and capability.
As Managing Director, the candidate will also advance organizational priorities (internal and external) by coordinating and developing a range of communications content and materials including strategic communication plans, identifying key messages, and producing materials (toolkits, videos, talk points, op-eds, speeches, press materials, etc.) that effectively convey timely and relevant information to diverse audiences.
Working closely with the CCO and VP, Communications, this position will promote organization-wide initiatives, campaign launches, research releases, innovative products, and community engagement. Through the lens of reaching target audiences, this collaborative and impact-focused communicator, will work cross-departmentally to uplift and garner attention to our issues through communications efforts. In addition to strategic writing, this position also will help manage the organization’s thought leadership efforts including helping lead and expand a virtual panel discussion series, pitch panel entries for national conferences, draft speaking opportunity scripts, and assist with gaining visibility around other priority projects.
The ideal candidate should have 10-12 years of experience in the fields of communications and/or journalism/media. They should have proven leadership skills, with an ability to manage projects independently. A communications generalist, but with an expertise in writing for news purposes and strong verbal communications skills. They should have a strong attention to detail and an ability to comprehensively run projects, working both independently and collaboratively, as well as the ability to manage and prioritize projects to satisfy competing deadlines. The individual must have the ability to communicate effectively, creatively, and clearly. Results-driven, organized, and self-motivated, with strong organizational and time-management skills; excited to work in a fast-paced and energetic environment. A solution-oriented, natural problem solver that can manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and have a sharp attention to detail. Tobacco control/public health knowledge and experience in managing agency partners are a plus.
The position is based Washington, D.C. with a hybrid work schedule of 3 days in the office and two telework days.
