Senior Scientist, BioProcess Science

Boehringer Ingelheim Athens, GA Full-Time




Performs the below duties within the TechnoShift program with proficiency without supervision\:

  • Is proficient to design and execute experimentation via current documentation guidelines in an independent and efficient manner, 

  • Is proficient to lead the Designing, Planning, Scheduling and Execution in development of process(es), optimization of process(es),confirmation of process(es), validation and manufacturing of qualifying and pre-licensing serials, with particular emphasis on high-density mammalian and insect cell cultures for viral infections and high-density bacterial fermentations.

  • Is proficient in Communicating work orally, in writing and in presentation format by treating reports and data with a high level of integrity and ethics and will complete roles and responsibilities as a TechnoShift Team Member,

  • Proficient in the designing of experimentation to improve consistency, stability and yields of product antigens, particularly through media optimization, paired with optimizing the process modes (batch/fed-batch/continuous flow), and

  • Proficient in Leading and Training junior scientists.

Duties & Responsibilities\:

  • Proficient in Leading transfer, scale up or scale down efforts of in the development, optimization and confirmation from small to large scale, for both batch mode and feeding strategies.

  • Lead optimization efforts of current processes by conducting experiments to evaluate different growth parameters, medium components and new equipment. 

  • Proposes, evaluates and implements the setting up, operation and validation of new equipment including single-use upstream and downstream equipment and equipment for perfusion mammalian/insect cell and bacterial bioprocesses.  Ensures maintenance of equipment and it is kept in operational status.  Proficient working with vendors and engineering to secure resources to evaluate instrument or equipment and represent the TechnoShift Team.

  • Capable of leading team meetings, lead projects team meetings, lead on-job trainings, assist in career development seminars and other assignments as determined by supervisor. Proposes, gains support with Core Team and/or sub Team, and implements the Design, Schedule, Execution and authoring protocols, conduct experiments and generation of reports and treats all data with a high level of integrity and ethics. Utilization of Statistical software is required. 


Senior Scientist, BioProcess Science - Techno Shift

  • Bachelors' degree from an accredited institution in Biochemistry, Engineering, Biopharmaceuticals, or another relevant scientific discipline required, plus fourteen (14) years relevant experience; Or 

  • Masters's degree from an accredited institution in Biochemistry, Engineering, Biopharmaceuticals, or another relevant scientific discipline required, plus ten (10) years relevant experience; Or 

  • PhD from an accredited institution in Biochemistry, Engineering, Biopharmaceuticals, or another relevant scientific discipline required, plus eight (8) years relevant experience preferred.

  • At least five (5) years of managerial experience, with leadership skills is preferred.

  • Must have the ability to operate and train team members on current instrumentation/equipment and learn then train new technology and concepts.

  • Concise, clear and accurate reporting of technical data and information.

  • Must have advanced lab skills with experience with bacteria, viruses, cell culture and down-stream processes.

  • Proficient in processes related to bioreactor/fermentation, down-stream methods and lyophilization, experienced with formulation of biological products is expected.

  • Proficiency in troubleshooting problems and take corrective actions to solve the problem and generate results on-time.

  •  Proficient utilizing Statistical software to generate data and can train junior scientists to utilize Statistical software and data analysis.

  • This position will be expected to lead or direct junior scientists and may assist higher level scientists in experimental designed to enhance current processes, investigate then resolve problems related to biological products, and to develop new or improve existing production processes.

  • Leading team members and hands on assistance will be required for both small scale and large scale including, but not limited to, up-stream processes, down stream processes and lyophilization processes.

  • This individual may have direct reports.

  • This individual will also be expected to represent BioProcess Science as a project Core Team Member and lead Sub-Teams.

    Physical Demands / Surroundings\: 

    • Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 50 pounds occasionally

    • Frequent periods of sitting, walking, and standing

    • Occasionally must climb stairs or ladders, balance, bend or stoop, crouch or squat

    • Occasional low level work, fine finger dexterity/ including grasping or pinching required

    • Writing and use of a computer keyboard frequently

    • Occasional use of personal protective equipment

    • Visual / Hearing Demands\:  Color vision and depth perception required. May require extended hours at a computer screen.  Must be able to read electronic documents of all types.  Hearing acuity required.

    • Capable of forming and maintaining value added relationships both domestically and internationally.

    Eligibility Requirements\:

    • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.

    • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required)
