Fleet Maintenance Manager (Assistant General Manager)

Greater Peoria Mass Transit District (GPMTD) oversees a 53-fixed route bus system that employs approximately 190 persons (CITYLINK), as well as a contracted para-transit service (CITYLIFT) and (COUNTY LINK) with service running 7 days a week.

The Assistant General Manager of Maintenance will work in concert with the management team in coordinating all operation and maintenance functions of the Citylink fixed route service.

GPMTD has a number of exciting Capital projects pending, and this role will be working on oversight and coordination with these projects including:

  • Remodel of existing maintenance facility
  • Remodel of transit center
  • Work in coordination with finance on RFP and implementation of AVL, APC and AVA project

Maintenance Manager Major Responsibilities:

  • Work with management team to ensure a smooth working environment for operational and maintenance staff
  • In relation to maintenance employees, is responsible for training and employee development; planning and directing the work; disciplining; handling employee complaints or grievances; and handling performance reviews
  • Schedule and administer fleet maintenance; assist in troubleshooting problems with equipment. 
  • Ensure that vehicles dispatched are in proper working condition
  • Ensure compliance on a day-to-day basis with State, Federal and Company requirements.  Ensures a safe environment exists and that all maintenance and related activities are in conformance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with management team providing status of maintenance and budget requirements.  May review financial and budget variances, review repair orders or code and approve account payable documents.
  • Ensure that maintenance technicians are trained on current operating procedures, are properly equipped, and motivated so that the maintenance program can be accomplished in a safe, timely, and cost-effective manner.
  • Oversee parts department ensuring proper inventory control along with timely parts availability.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures for fleet maintenance operations
  • Serve on various boards and committees as designated by the General Manager such as Program Development Committee, Capital Projects Committee, Human Service Transportation Plan, ADA committee, Peoria/Pekin Urbanized Area Transportation Study Committee, various chamber activities and other user group functions
  • Work in concert with organized labor 
  • Complete special projects as assigned. 

Maintenance Manager Qualifications:

  • 3- 5 years’ experience in maintenance management of public or commercial transportation services
  • Previous automotive, diesel or alternative fuel repair experience; transit bus experience helpful
  • Technician school training, Associates Degree or higher preferred
  • Experience working in union environment preferred
  • Knowledge of Federal Transit Administration (FTA) programs and policies
  • Thorough knowledge of transit services
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, working relationships with others
  • Strong written and verbal communicate skills, especially in customer relations
  • Excellent team-building skills
  • Ability to make independent decisions within scope of responsibility
  • Knowledge and skills of TVM, PEM Reporting, replenishment, troubleshooting, as well as SPX Genfare fare collection system
  • Background check and drug screen required.
