Position Overview
The Gastroenterology Nurse Practitioner (GI NP) is responsible for delivering complex outpatient and inpatient care, advocating for the needs of Veterans, and promoting patient-centered care across all levels of the organization. The GI NP functions as a practitioner, role model, change agent, innovator, teacher, researcher, and consultant.
Major Duties
- Coordinates GI patients and multidisciplinary staff in the delivery of complex care including patient evaluation, performing or arranging for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, triage to appropriate care settings, and gathering baseline and follow-up data.
- Provides teaching to patients and family as needed.
- Serves as a consultant to multidisciplinary staff in initiating and implementing problem-solving strategies for patients with complex care plans.
- Develops and utilizes practice guidelines or clinical pathways as necessary to streamline multi-disciplinary evaluation and treatment.
- Provides direct patient care in the outpatient GI clinics, performing history and physical exams under the supervision of an attending physician.
- Facilitates consultations and participates in the care of patients, providing follow-up care.
- Collaborates with defined physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, pharmacists, dieticians, chaplains, and cancer program staff to ensure that the multidisciplinary needs of the GI patient are met.
- Participates in quality improvement activities, including the monitoring of treatment guidelines.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for the position, candidates must meet the following:
- Education: A post-master's certificate or master's or doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner.
- Licensure: Must possess and maintain an active, current, full, and unrestricted APN license to practice as an NP.
- Certification: Must maintain full and current board certification in an area of clinical specialty.
Physical Requirements
This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. The incumbent must be able to push or pull 45 pounds or more and may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm
Telework: May be available on an ad-hoc basis
Virtual: This is not a virtual position
