Mount Sinai is one of the largest U.S. health systems with a strong reputation for quality of care (17th ranked US academic medical center) and innovative research/education (17th ranked US medical school, >$400M annually in NIH-funded research). This reputation is important but its not enough. At Mount Sinai, we have a responsibility to make healthcare better, optimizing its value for patients, purchasers, and communities.

The health care industry has a number of problems. Chief among them is affordability as federal and state governments are unable to keep Medicare & Medicaid solvent, employers are stretched to pay for health benefits for their employees, and those employees struggle to afford increasing paycheck deductions and deductibles. In addition, the industry has historically set a low bar for customer service, earning some of the lowest satisfaction scores of any industry, eroding trust from stakeholders. In recent years, employers and labor unions have begun to solve these problems by contracting directly with vendors and select providers to optimize value.

Mount Sinai Solutions was created to collaborate directly with the purchaser to solve these problems. We have assembled Mount Sinai's clinical and population health assets into product offerings of high-quality care that are affordable and distinguish themselves via exceptional service. Our offerings include next-generation primary care at or near the workplace (Health Centers), centers of excellence for specialty care, and high-performance network (HPN) based health benefit plans, in partnership with health plans. Our team markets & sells these products directly to the purchaser i.e., consumers, large employers, labor unions. We are looking for people to join our team who are passionate about solving these problems by developing a true system of care that can deliver market-leading value.

Role Summary

There is a $750 million and growing addressable market opportunity in the New York City metro area from large employers and labor unions that contract directly with high value providers for true primary care that includes navigation, immediate care, preventive care, and tech-enabled programs to improve health and manage chronic illness, as well as centers of excellence for specialty care focused on common surgeries and chronic conditions.

Large employers (e.g. Walmart) and large labor unions (e.g. SEIU Local 32BJ) are shifting from purchasing exclusively through health plans to direct contracts with these high value providers, changing benefits plans to incent their employees to consume more from them. Almost 60% of large employers have purchased some form of primary care directly from providers and many labor unions (that make up 20% of the NYC commercial market) have followed suit. Competition for these direct contracts is intense from health systems and specialty hospitals (e.g. Northwell, NYU, Memorial Sloan Kettering, HSS) as well as well-capitalized vendors (e.g. Signify Health, Carrum Health, Transcarent in the specialty care COE space and Premise Health and OneMedical in the primary care space).

Mount Sinai entered this space in 2016; since then, we have grown significantly and established a reputation as a market-leader. In the direct primary care space we have added 15 large employer and union customers, 55,000 eligible members, >$20 million in annual revenue, 5 cities, and multiple additions to our product portfolio. In the COE space, we have grown our customers, products, and markets (now available in 6 markets in addition to NYC). Our customers have enjoyed market-leading value, saving millions while improving health care outcomes and service (consistent 90+ member NPS).

We have also launched new products; the first is focused on advisory services for employers and unions, initially to effectively guide their members through Covid and increasingly to strategize on how best to improve the overall healthcare experience and value for employees and members. Our second new product is a high performance network product that integrates insurance benefit design with our next generation primary care, navigation and member services, and specialty care COEs to deliver market-leading health value and member experience.

The Manager, Commercialization and Chief of Staff is accountable to work collaboratively with the dyad leaders of Mount Sinai Solutions to lead and govern the business, and to define the future strategy of the business. Mount Sinai Solutions is led by the Vice President & General Manager of Commercialization and the Vice President of Customer Relationships & Growth. The Chief of Staff will be responsible for leading a team that includes a Strategy Associate as well as a Team Coordinator. The Chief of Staff will collaborate with leaders from across Mount Sinai Solutions, as well as across the broader Mount Sinai Health System, as part of their role. This role requires a strong functional business strategy toolkit including developing market intelligence, business strategy and decision frameworks, building complex, multi-year Excel-based financial forecasts and operational models, and presenting to senior and executive leaders.


Governance The Chief of Staff will support the Vice Presidents in governing Mount Sinai Solutions through the optimal combination of structures and processes highlights:

  • Develop, track, and interpret KPIs, as well as leading and lagging indicators, to that maximize business performance

  • Develop and actively manage corporate governance calendar, ensure appropriate touch points (e.g., meetings or other communications) at the right levels of the organization to garner system support and enable effective decision-making and efficient business operations

  • Develop RACI and clarify decision-making processes and authority across the organization

  • Develop materials to support various governance processes e.g., materials for Board of Trustees or MSHS Executive Leadership Team presentations

  • Collaborate with MSS business leads and finance lead to assemble comprehensive business strategy, performance, and financial updates

  • Collaborate with leads from across MSS to ensure highly productive internal governance meetings e.g., clear meeting objectives and right materials and people in attendance to achieve those objectives

  • Interact in a way that strengthens relationships and reputation with senior executive leaders from all areas of the Mount Sinai organization, including clinical leaders, hospital presidents and administrative leadership, executive leaders, and the Board of Trustees

Future Strategy The Chief of Staff will support the Vice Presidents in developing the future strategy for Mount Sinai Solutions highlights:

  • Collaborate with customers and product teams to gather market intelligence through a combination of research and relationships with other business leaders in the market, document findings into concise summaries with clear, actionable insights and share broadly with leaders of MSS

  • Support development and an annual refresh of multi-year strategic plans for the business that include market assessments (including total addressable market, competitors, customers), business strategy (product portfolio, pricing, customer pipeline, operating model), and multi-year financial projections

  • Develop frameworks to evaluate and compare various option sets for key decisions big and small (e.g., broad future business strategy and near-term product decisions)

  • Support leaders of MSS to identify the optimal corporate structure to achieve future business strategy

  • Identify strategic partners, support exploratory discussions to clarify MSS objectives for a potential partnership and support the deal process to advance these relationships

Special Projects The Chief of Staff will lead various special projects at the direction of the Vice Presidents of Mount Sinai Solutions highlights:

  • Lead special projects that span product, operations, and customers functions within all lines of business; take a question or problem defined by the leaders of MSS and recommend the best approach to answer that question or solve the problem

  • Build clear project approaches with accompanying project plans that include deliverables, milestones, accountability, and timelines

  • Build support with key stakeholders whose input and support is needed to accomplish project

  • Collaborate effectively, working closely as a team with various leads from across MSS to accomplish projects

Team Operations The Chief of Staff will support the Vice Presidents in nurturing the culture and managing the operations of the entire commercialization team highlights:

  • Recommend operational norms and processes that reinforce team culture and values

  • Develop team communications that inform, motivate, and inspire the team; recommend optimal communication channels (e.g., emails, meetings, show and tell, ask me anything, other forums)

  • Implement and maintain a streamlined operations infrastructure to support efficient team communications (e.g., team roster, list servs, Slack, Teams, other means)

  • Develop process for knowledge management across the organization and help maintain on ongoing basis

  • Organize employee onboarding process in collaboration with hiring managers across the business

  • Develop ideas to drive employee engagement and retention; work collaboratively with the fun committee to implement ideas

  • Manage space allocation to enable effective business collaboration



  • Bachelors Degree required; MBA, MPA, or MHA preferred

Other Qualities

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in business setting

  • Healthcare experience required across health services, health plan, government, or start-up environments

  • Experience in corporate strategy a plus

  • Consulting experience a plus

  • Strong business analytics toolkit (building Excel-based financial and operational models, SQL or Tableau skills a plus)

  • Highly organized, structured, and detail-oriented in approach to leading teams and stakeholders

  • Innovative thinker who can develop solutions where there are few precedents; comfortable with ambiguity

  • Exceptional people leader who knows how to get the best out of individuals and teams
