Sr. Research Specialist

Johns Hopkins University Baltimore, MD Full-Time

Our laboratory develops molecular recording technologies to track mammalian development and understand how it is altered in the course of developmental disorders. We use genome engineering, high-throughput and in situ sequencing, as well as computational strategies. We are seeking a Senior Research Specialist II  who will oversee the lab’s operation day-to-day, oversee our sprawling mouse colony, oversee our NextGen sequencing operations, and train and onboard new lab personnel. This person will also act in a research scientist capacity, working on own project. 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversees our mouse colony, involving ~1,000 mice. This work includes implementing and using state-of-the-art next generation sequencing technologies for high-throughput genotyping of mice, setting up crosses, setting up barcoding experiments.
  • Oversees lab operations, including ordering reagents and materials, monitoring stocks, on-boarding new lab personnel, ensuring compliance with regulatory and safety requirements.
  • Oversees our next-gen sequencing operations (Illumina MiSeq), coordinates various sequencing experiments in the lab, prepares sequencing libraries, operates the sequencer, and provides machine maintenance.
  • Training new lab personnel in molecular biology, rodent work, tissue culture, etc.
  • Carries out research in identifying safe harbors in human, mouse, and marmoset genomes for transgenesis. 
  • Designs experimental approaches for research projects.
  • Performs a range of assays and experiments, including cell culture, qPCR, gel electrophoresis, fluorescence microscopy, next-generation sequencing.
  • Processes and analyzes data into figures for scientific publications.
  • Organizes barcoding experiments. Implements timed pregnancies involving barcoded embryos and collects the embryos at the appropriate stage for further analysis.
  • Writes code to analyze sequencing data.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • 4 years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in animal husbandry.
  • Experience in next-generation sequencing.
  • Experience in tissue culture.
  • Experience in programming in Python and R.
  • Experience managing large and complex mouse colonies.
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing library preparation.
  • Basic knowledge of coding in MATLAB or R and Perl or Python.
  • Experience in mammalian cell culture technique, including culture human iPSCs.
