Job Description

The IT Security Senior Engineer functions include day-to-day operations of the security solutions (Firewalls, IDS/IPS, etc.) and the identification, investigation, and resolution of security incidents detected by those systems. This role will help establish new security standards, architectural standards and design secure solutions. Secondary tasks will include the development and/or implementation of security solutions, which fit into the security architecture. The IT Security Senior Engineer is expected to be fully aware of the enterprise's security goals as established by its stated policies, procedures and guidelines and to actively work towards upholding those goals.


  • Architects and deploys security solutions that solve security needs and fit appropriately within the Paycom environment

  • Provides direction to Paycom's current security program and continues to push it forward

  • Manages global security projects and communicates progress to team members and management

  • Identifies the root cause of systemic issues within the organization and provides solution guidance

  • Takes ownership of processes/responsibilities assigned when necessary

  • Upholds a strong understanding of Networking Principles (Layers 1 - 7)

  • Maintains current standards, requirements, and documentation for deployed security technologies and ticket handling

  • Mentors team members and assists in their growth and development

  • Demonstrates a mastery of security best practices, network security appliances, and other security solutions

  • Participate in the creation of enterprise security documents (policies, standards, baselines, guidelines and procedures), where appropriate

  • Participate in the planning and design of an enterprise Business Continuity Plan and Disaster Recovery Plan, where appropriate

  • Maintain up-to-date detailed knowledge of the IT security industry

  • Perform the deployment, integration, and initial configuration of new security solutions and of any enhancements to existing security solutions

  • Review logs and reports of all devices, whether under IT Security control (i.e., security tools) or other asset owners (i.e., workstations, servers, network devices, etc.). Interpret the implications of that activity and devise plans for appropriate resolution

  • Provide on-call support as needed for security solutions

  • Perform analysis of network traffic and alerts to assess, prioritize and differentiate between potential intrusion attempts and false alarms

  • Collaborate with IT, security, human resources, and legal to ensure full legal compliance of company policies, procedures, forms, notices, and materials

  • Document and report on specific duties, activities, problems solved, and issues resolved

  • Perform additional duties and assignments as requested

  • Work outside the standard office 8-hour workday may be required with on-call availability



Bachelor's Degree in Technology is required.

Industry Certification (GCIH, GCIA, GMON, GFNA, CISSP, GSE, etc.) preferred

Experience Required:

6+ years of network and/or security administration


  • Extensive experience with IPS/IDS, packet/traffic analysis and related tools

  • Extensive experience with information security principles and practices to include, but not limited to, the following areas: Vulnerability Scanning; Security Information and Event Management; Next Generation Firewalls; Network Intrusion; Host Based Security; SIEM; Data Loss Prevention; Malware Prevention

  • Expert knowledge and experience with TCP/IP, Microsoft operating systems, and networks

  • Extensive experience with firewall architecture, design, configuration, and maintenance

  • Ability to deliver reporting on and providing fixes to identified vulnerabilities

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Highly responsive with an ability to handle escalations quickly and professionally

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Interpret and apply laws, regulations and policies

  • Work for extended time at keyboard/terminal

  • Maintain effective working relationships with supervisor and coworkers

  • Availability to respond to emergency situations
