Job Description

The Johnson Controls facility in Marinette, Wisconsin has been in operation for more than 100 years supporting generations of employees in manufacturing, research & development, technical services & training, customer services, marketing, product management and more.
 
Our 700 employees design, produce, market and support several leading fire protection brands including our globally recognized ANSUL products: fire extinguishers and mobile hose line units; specialized restaurant, vehicle, and industrial systems; sophisticated fire detection/suppression systems and a complete line of fire suppressing agents.
 
Every year, hundreds of customers from around the world attend the ANSUL Fire School to learn the basics of hands-on portable extinguisher firefighting and we hold dozens of intense product training programs where our 1000 authorized distributors are instructed and tested in system design, installation, and service.

What you will do
The Research Scientist assists the R&D team by developing potential novel products to support the fire suppression business, developing conditions for chemical reactions (lab and production scale), and providing detailed observations to color, temperature, and quality. Testing materials for function and developing relationships between structure and performance. Defining the reaction and process for scale up to manufacturing. This will include analysis of the product and impurities, as well as leading the cross functional team to bring novel materials to production. Develop ideas, plan, and lead projects for novel products and process improvement of existing materials.

How you will do it
As a Research Scientist, you should have an in depth understanding of synthetic chemistry, understanding of a wide variety of laboratory techniques, and ability to work independently and safely in the lab. You should have strong interpersonal skills, be a team player, have good problem solving skills, be able to understand and follow verbal and written work instructions, and have familiarity with Microsoft Office applications like Word, Excel, and Outlook

What we look for
Required Qualifications – Education, Skills & Experience
  • BS in Chemistry with minimum of five years experience, Master’s in Synthetic Organic Chemistry with 3 years of synthetic organic experience, or PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry with post doctorate work experience.
  • Experience with at least one or more:  surfactant chemistry, polymer chemistry, process development or formulation a plus
Preferred Qualifications – Education, Skills & Experience
  • Proven ability to work independently, and to contribute to a team
  • Perform synthetic research and process development in support new product development, and sustain the existing portfolio of the specialty chemical division
  • Perform and interpret analytical assessments of products to evaluate quality (GC, HPLC, pH, Karl Fisher, Titration, NMR, IR) of intermediates and finished products
  • Perform lab scale application testing on new and existing materials to support internal and external customer data requests
  • Prepare testing documentation such as spreadsheets and reports with data interpretation
  • Actively contribute to safety program
  • Support team in any aspect of project work and collaborate globally with the international team
