The Associate R&D Director has accountability for talent development and technology/business delivery for Synthesis R&D across Architectural and Industria l Coatings, as well as Additives. This team supports and leads innovations for Synthesis & Process R&D in DCM and is closely linked with our Scale-up and Manufacturing team s to move new innovations from the lab scale to pilot scale to commercial p lant scale . The team is also closely tied to the TS&D team and engaged with external customers , as i nnovation is a key driver to long-term relationships in this industry.

(1) Talent Development: provides supervision and leadership to a group of roughly 20 research professionals in Synthesis R&D . The Associate R&D Director provides short- and long-term resource plans to deliver the R&D innovation playbook, charter s project teams to support strategic objectives , and lead s safety, recruiting/training, and employee development for researchers.

(2) Technology/Business Delivery: The Associate R&D Director plays a key role in supporting the development of the Architectural Coatings R&D Strategy, Product Technology Roadmaps, Innovation Playbook Portfolio, and Synthesis R&D laboratory capabilities. The Associate R&D Director also collaborates with Coatings R&D/TS&D Directors and Commercial Leaders globally to expand upon a one-team market-driven innovation culture to bring new material innovations and solutions to customers. This includes leading the definition of new opportunity identification, strategic leadership, intellectual property, and breakthrough exploration with Core R&D for differentiated higher margin value return or cost savings to the portfolio.

The ideal candidate will have relevant experience in product innovation across Customers, Pilot Plants, Tech Center, and Manufacturing and a track record of what it takes to develop and commercialize a new raw material product . In particular, direct experience with the d evelopment and scale up of new chemistry, MOC reviews, reactive chem istry , process research, procedures, and overall innovation work process steps is preferred. Moreover, the Associate R&D Director will be called upon to engage with customers by presenting/highlighting new innovations to external technical/commercial leaders , as well as, leading key strategic initiatives and managing stakeholder expectations .

The Associate R&D Director will play a critical role in bridging the interface between Product R&D (latex binder chemistry, morphology for structure-property application-to-product design through new chemistry) , Applications R&D (formulation driven-product performance focus on paints/coatings) , and Commercial Teams , as well as influence the scale up of new chemistry and address raw material changes and production /quality issues .

Responsibilities / Duties

  • Provides supervision and leadership to a large organization of research employees (~20) , and accountable for the supervision of subordinate manager.

  • I nfluence s and lead s cross-functional / cross-business innovation teams towards a common strategic objective . Enthusiasm for helping the team succeed and for coaching individual team members.

  • Manages all people processes for direct reports and provides overall direction and oversight for all people processes within their organization.

  • Supports the development of short- and long-term people resource s based on the innovation strategy for the organization and supports and executes recruiting strategies and succession plans for critical roles within the organization.

  • Develops, prioritizes, and manages research project portfolio and technology platforms within area of accountability in support of innovation targets for the business/organization.

  • Applies strong knowledge of Dows innovation process (encompassing the scientific method, experimentation and implementation, playbook management , and strategic/critical thinking ) .

  • Applies knowledge of key business drivers and the factors that maximize department performance in order to identify, champion, and charter projects in support of strategic objectives. Champions the development of strong IP portfolio within the department.

  • Represents R&D on multifunctional teams, such as Market Management Team s (MMT) and Market Implementation Teams (MIT) .

  • Leads communications between the R&D/TS&D group and across other functions.

  • Drives the definition of the R&D requirements for a business across a geographic area and implements steps to use R&D as a way to differentiate Dow from the competition.

  • Serves as lead management liaison with strategic external customers and value chain partners.

  • Champions a safety culture by driving EH&S best practices throughout the global organization, and creating initiatives that reinforce best safety practices, habits, and behaviors.

  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills to inform and collaborate effectively at all levels of the organization to manage stakeholder expectations, as well as with third parties. Ability to build trust and strong relationships with internal and external partners .

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Engineering, or science related field.

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience.

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree or PhD preferred.

  • People leadership experience.
