Job Description


•The Senior Financial Analyst, Benefits and Technical Accounting assists the Manager of Benefits and Technical Accounting in the day-to-day responsibilities of the Technical Accounting and External Reporting Department. This person must have above average knowledge of technical accounting matters in order to assist with the timely and accurate evaluation of complex U.S. GAAP matters and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) rules and regulations. This person will assist in the preparation of technical accounting white papers, analysis reports and management presentations on complex accounting and reporting matters. This person works closely with the business groups and corporate functions to ensure complex accounting issues are appropriately identified, analyzed and reported to senior management and appropriately disclosed in the company’s financial statements.

Job Responsibilities:

•Assist with the identification of technical accounting matters in the company’s routine and non-routine business processes and perform analysis, prepare documentation and present results to management.
•Work with the company’s business unit management and corporate functions on complex accounting matters and bring forward solutions for significant technical matters.
•Assist with reviewing accounting and funding requirements for the company’s defined benefit pension plans, OPEB plans, workers compensation and other employee benefit plans.
•Review segment and business unit breakdown of corporate expense for benefit plans and work with business unit management to allocate costs among the business units.
•Assist with the review of the company’s annual valuation reports of benefit plans and analyze information presented in the actuarial valuations for accounting.
•Prepare financial statements disclosures for the company’s benefits plans.
•Provide benefit plan support and cost evaluations to other departments (i.e. Financial Planning & Analysis, Human Resources, Treasury, etc.).
•Assist with the in Annual Operating Plan and forecast process to develop employee benefit and incentive accruals and costs.
•Develop and enhance internal controls over benefit accounting to improve clarity and consistency.
•Assist with the quarterly (10-Q) and annual (10-K) financial statement preparation process and work with the company’s auditors in completing their reviews and audits.
•Monitor standard setting activities at the FASB, SEC, ERISA, PBGC, DOL, and other regulatory bodies as they relate to accounting matters and report their implications.

Qualification:

•BS or BA degree in Accounting with CPA required
•3 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance
•Previous experience in public accounting (preferably big four)
•Ability to work effectively in a team environment
•Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
•Cognitive ability to prepare analysis, reports and presentations using various software packages including Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
•Ability to research and analyze technical accounting matters and summarize in a concise manner
•Possesses strong technical and analytical skills
•Thinks conceptually/Intuitively
•Makes sound decisions
•Ability to complete assignments within tight deadlines
•Fosters open communications
•Works effectively within a team environment
•Strong verbal and written communication skills
