Accountabilities / Responsibilities

The Senior Lease Accountant is responsible for maintaining real estate and equipment leases in the subledger. This includes reviewing agreements for classification, appropriately entering lease terms into the subledger, posting and review journal entries, and analysis of the balance sheet and P&L transactions. The Senior Lease Accountant will also be responsible for mentoring and reviewing work of the lease accountant. The position reports to the Lease Accounting Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the lease accounting subledger within accounting software
  • Review lease agreements, assess appropriate accounting classification (capital vs. operating), and prepare appropriate supporting documentation, including maintenance of subledger
  • Review work product of lease accounting staff, including FAS analysis, balance sheet reconciliation, and month-end close journal entries, and provide feedback as appropriate
  • Understand and apply relevant lease accounting guidance to agreements and transactions to ensure completeness and accuracy of center financial statements
  • Analyze lease accounting transactions on both the P&L and balance sheet for accuracy, and perform adjusting journal entries as necessary
  • Work closely with the Real Estate Coordinator and third-party lease administration providers to ensure the subledger is appropriately maintained and updated as leases are amended, renewed and terminated
  • Perform month end close procedures, including preparing and recording multiple adjusting journal entries
  • Prepare and maintain assigned balance sheet account reconciliations, research outstanding issues and propose corrections
  • Assist with due diligence for prospective acquisitions, up to and including preparation of opening balance sheet for new acquisitions, and assist in closing balance sheet activities for divestitures
  • Prepare and analyze various monthly/quarterly financial reports and various ad hoc reports from key stakeholders


  • BS in Accounting or Finance required
  • 4 + year experience in corporate or public accounting preferred
  • Experience in real estate lease accounting preferred
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and statistical skills
  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, organizational, and time management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to interact with all levels of management
  • Proficiency in Microsoft: Excel, Outlook, Word
