Nuclear Materials Technology Technician
Job Description
Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking a senior technician for its Core Materials Laboratory (CDL). The mission of CDL is to provide specialized technical expertise to drive naval nuclear fuel system technological advancement and effectively transfer that technology from our laboratory to our customers. CDL is a unique test laboratory comprised of an independent team of engineers, scientists, and technologists who conduct self-sponsored research and development initiatives. In doing so, you'll develop expertise in fuel operations in the laboratory setting.
Responsibilities include:
• Hands-on testing of fuel and poison materials utilizing advanced processing equipment, analytical tools, and custom hardware.
• Properly analyze materials, evaluate data, and understand results, as well as self-triggering on questionable results and troubleshooting problems.
• Coordinate with engineers and scientists, fellow technologists, and personnel outside of CDL who support laboratory operations.
• Maintain administrative and operational aspects of the laboratories, including execution of radiological surveys, material accountability, and equipment corrective and preventative maintenance.
• Obtain operational qualifications including contamination worker, glovebox worker, qualified monitor, chemical hygiene, fuel handler, and material accountability. Demonstration and validation of these qualifications are performed via written and practical exams, work surveillances, and drills.
• Work with radioactive and nuclear materials. Testing is performed in a glovebox containment environment which require dexterity, precision tool and control manipulation, and stamina.
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience; or Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience; or Journeyman's papers in a related field and a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience; or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Skills
Proven ability to team well with others from widely diverse backgrounds, e.g., engineers, laboratory personnel, management and customers.
Demonstrated proficiency in basic mathematics, chemistry, physics, nuclear technology, instrumentation and control, and/or engineering.
Background or experience in the fields of materials or ceramics.
Laboratory or testing experience including equipment design, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Glovebox operations benefit from good dexterity and endurance.

Pay Range
$76,400.00 - $117,000.00 annually

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation.
