Position Description

The Seattle City Employees' Retirement System (SCERS) provides retirement income to thousands of former City of Seattle employees and their beneficiaries through a defined benefit plan. There are approximately 19,400 active/retired/vested members or beneficiaries who participate in the plan. SCERS stewards just over $3.7 billion in assets as of the latest reporting period.

SCERS is seeking a Retirement Specialist with strong math calculation abilities, the desire to help people, and a proven track record in customer service to join our Member Services team.

The Retirement Specialist provides consultation, coordination, and research analysis to determine member eligibility for retirement, calculation of benefits, historical research related to service credit and earnings to ensure accurate benefit entitlements, member counseling, time loss, and educational seminars.

This position reports to the Member Services Manager.

Candidates are required to fully complete the job application, answer the questions in the Supplemental Questionnaire, submit a current resume' and cover letter. Only candidates who submit all required documents will be considered for this position.

Candidates selected for interview will be tested for qualifications.

Job Responsibilities

TheRetirementSpecialistisresponsibleforallpensionoperationsrelatedtothetransitionofactive/vested SCERSmembersandthosewithdualmembershipthroughtheretirementprocess.

Typical duties include:

* Evaluates member eligibility to receive benefits and verifies data for estimates of benefit calculations.
* Researches, compiles, analyzes, and interprets important, complex employment, wage, and contribution information for determination of service credit eligibility and calculation of benefit amounts by using actuarial tables and various mathematical formulas. Uses electronic tools (PeopleSoft, EV5, Pension Administration System/V3, etc.) to perform research of member information.
* Analyzes pension benefit applications for completeness and compliance with Laws, Municipal Code, and policies.
* Counsels members and/or beneficiaries on benefit options, service retirement, disability and death benefits, deferral of benefits, withdrawals, and reciprocal provisions. Ensures that available options are used for members' best benefits in light of system requirements.
* Utilizes Microsoft Excel, Windows Software, EV5, PeopleSoft, Pension Administration System/V3, RIS/Legacy software, and other designated databases to compile and calculate data, conduct data analysis, and produce reports.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

A baccalaureate degree in business or public administration, human resources, or related field and two years of professional experience in retirement administration, benefits administration, fiscal administration (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.)

Desired Qualifications:

* Technical and detail-oriented individual that can thrive in deadline-oriented office.
* Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, Windows Software, EV5, PeopleSoft, Pension Administration System, and other designated databases to compile and calculate data, data analysis, and produce reports.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate written and verbal pension benefit information accurately and tactfully to a diverse group of individuals.
* Experience presenting to groups of individuals and answering questions.
* Demonstrated ability to maintain the confidentiality of the position.
* Ability to foster an integrated organizational culture of trust, innovation, and engagement; and the ability to work independently and with initiative.

Additional Information

Work is performed in a small City office environment and involves an often-heavy workload, pressure of deadlines, and frequent interruptions. SCERS offers interested employees a hybrid work schedule. Current Retirement Specialists work three days a week onsite and two days a week remotely.
