Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Visual Impairment Teacher to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for empowering individuals with visual impairments, providing specialized instruction, and fostering independence. As part of the role of a Visual Impairment Teacher, maintaining regular and effective communication with parents is crucial. The aim is to assist parents in developing a realistic understanding of their child's abilities, progress, and future goals.
Job Type:
Per Diem, Los Angeles CA, Onsite
$50.00 - $100.00 per hour.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct assessments to identify the specific needs and abilities of students with visual impairments.
- Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) or IFSP to address academic, developmental, and mobility goals.
- Provide specialized instruction in core subjects, adaptive technology, orientation and mobility, and daily living skills.
- Conduct functional vision evaluations (FVE), learning media assessments (LMA), and orientation and mobility evaluations (O&M) for both initial referrals and reevaluations of students requiring visual impairment (VI) and orientation and mobility (O&M) services.
- Collaborate with educational teams, including general education teachers, therapists, and support staff, to create an inclusive learning environment.
- Adapt and create instructional materials that cater to the unique learning styles and needs of students with visual impairments.
- Use a variety of instructional strategies, tools, and technologies to enhance learning experiences.
- Provide orientation and mobility training to help students navigate their environments safely.
- Foster independence by teaching essential life skills, including self-advocacy and self-care.
- Regularly assess student progress and adjust instructional strategies as needed.
- Collaborate with parents, guardians, and other stakeholders to support student success.
- Provide regular updates to parents and stakeholders on the student’s academic and developmental progress, sharing insights into the student’s strengths, challenges, and achievements, and discussing the goals, strategies, and adaptations outlined in the IEP.
- Prepare and provide detailed progress reports that highlight specific achievements and areas for improvement, offering recommendations for activities and strategies that parents can implement at home to support their child's learning.
- Maintain an open line of communication through emails, phone calls, and in-person meetings as needed.
Qualifications:
- Completion of a degree program from an accredited four-year college or university. (Applicants selected for hire must provide copies of all college or university transcripts.)
- Education Specialist Instruction Credential: Visual Impairments (R3VB or R3VI)
- Must possess or be willing to acquire ESL certification within a specified timeframe.
- Proven experience working with students with visual impairments.
- Knowledge of adaptive technologies, braille, and other tools used in visual impairment education.
- Strong understanding of the impact of visual impairments on learning and development.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Ability to create and implement effective, individualized education plans.
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting individuals with visual impairments.
Skills:
- Expertise in teaching core subjects using adapted materials and methods.
- Proficiency in using adaptive technologies and tools for individuals with visual impairments.
- Ability to assess and address the unique needs of each student.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Collaboration and teamwork in an inclusive educational setting.
