The Standards & Certifications Engineer will assist with the global codes and certifications processes for the NEMA Motor Division in Fort Smith, AR. This position provides high level assistance and direction on various technical and procedural matters such as test scope for new products, existing products, and new technologies that are seeking certifications. This position will primarily cover certifications including UL/ CSA in North America, CE (Conformité Européenne) and ATEX (ATmospheres EXplosibles Standard) in Europe, IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission​) and IECEx internationally. The position will also cover regional certification in Saudi Arabia, Africa, Australia, India, China, etc.. Team with Sales and Product Management to determine the compliancy requirements with relevant federal, industry, and safety regulations and standards in targeted markets, pursue and maintain the necessary appropriate certifications or qualifications to allow marking of product for placement into targeted markets or applications.

Your responsibilities

  • Assist in coordination with Product Management to identify requirements for certification of products in target markets.
  • Coordinate with and be a point of contact with third party certification and accreditation bodies (e.g., UL, CSA, Sira, DOE, NRCAN, ANCE, etc.)
  • Interface between ABB engineering and certifiers. Pursue new certifications and certification updates as required.
  • Have a working knowledge of UL (Underwriter's Laboratory), CSA (Canadian Standards Association​), NFPA (National Fire Protection Act - USA​), DOE (Design of Experiments) as related to motors for North America. Secondary knowledge of ATEX (Atmosphere Explosible), RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances), LV (Low Voltage), ErP (Enterprise Resource Planning), EMC (Electromagnetic compatibility​), REACH, WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment​) and Machinery Directives would be advantageous.
  • Assist in the management and maintenance of certification records and files.
  • Assist in interpretation of regulations, standards, and certifications with respect to product design, safety, and marking requirements.

Your background

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with minimum 2 years experience in Standards & Certifications and/or Quality Process Management.
  • Preferred Experience includes: motor design and testing requirements, IECEx (International Electrotechnical Commission System), ATEX, MSHA(Mine Safety and Health Administration) and Division 1 motor design requirements.
  • Ability to work in the USA without Visa assistance. Ability to travel (10-15% max).
