This position primarily involves design and development of AC-DC and DC-DC power supplies intended for military and high-reliability COTS applications in the 100W to 5 KW range realized using a combination of prepackaged and discrete power converters along with both analog and digital control and monitoring circuits. These high-density designs make extensive use of SMT and other miniaturization techniques. The project engineering duties encompass complete product development responsibility including conceptualization of the initial product design and formalization of the product design specification for each project.
From the initial design, through prototype build, test and production release, the project engineer ensures that each project is completed in a cost-effective and timely manner that addresses the applicable DFA, DFM and DFT guidelines. Design and development work involves use of computer design tools and software to perform assignments including schematic capture and PWB layout, as well as 'hands-on bench work using test and measurement equipment for breadboard and prototype testing, and product verification testing including support of external test lab efforts and other off-site work as necessary. Other tasks associated with the position include preparation and maintenance of product technical manuals, test procedures and other product and process documentation as well as direct and indirect customer support, continuing support of on-site and off-site production, and research and evaluation of new technologies, topologies, components and materials. The position requires leadership and direction of the work of other engineers and technicians.
The successful candidate for this position must be well-organized, open-minded, decisive and flexible, able to communicate well with others, work cooperatively in a team environment, and lead others both by direction and by example. Good writing, communication and computer skills are necessary, as is the ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities. Extensive knowledge and experience utilizing various power conversion topologies and control methods is required, as is experience designing reliable switching power supplies with analog and/or digital control. Other necessary elements include strong analog circuit design skills and knowledge of digital design and embedded software development within the power supplies, experience using CAD software packages, knowledge of and experience designing to meet commercial airborne and MIL standards along with testing to verify compliance.
