To provide immediate/urgent care to patients under the supervision of a physician. Care includes counseling and educating patients and family members, addressing patient’s chief complaint, performing diagnostic and therapeutic tests/procedures. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
Ensure proper diagnosis, treatment, and management of illnesses and injuries, including management of lacerations, minor trauma and orthopedic injuries.
Obtains complete medical and psychosocial histories.
Performs evaluation and problem identification of patients.
Orders relevant laboratory tests, determines medication and other necessary treatments.
Prescribing and administering medications.
Provides appropriate health education and counseling.
Ensuring complete and timely documentation using the EHR.
Instructs medical students appropriate to skill level as determined by physician supervisor.
Performs emergency triage of patients.
Initiates the referral of patients to other departments and agencies.
Current licensure as nurse practitioner/ nurse or physician assistant in appropriate jurisdiction.
NCCPA certification is necessary.
Some previous ED/Urgent Care or primary care experience is preferred.
Excellent communication skills required.
1+ year of experience in a urgent care or primary care setting, which includes the ability to manage adult and pediatric patients.
Must fulfill the criteria for licensure and certification as a nurse practitioner/physician assistant in the District of Columbia.
