Tool and Die Maker - 2nd Shift

SUMMARY
The Tool and Die Maker analyzes specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to fabricate and repair metalworking dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Tool & Die Construction
*Plans and works from extremely complicated blueprints, drawings, sketches and oral directions to create and produce intricate progressive, and compound dies and tools, fixtures, jigs, models and parts.
*Applies advanced shop mathematics, handbook formulas and a wide variety of precision measuring instruments to compute dimensions and plan and layout work.
*Independently computes dimensions, plans layouts, and determines assembly methods and sequences of operations.
*Ensure that tools/ processes are set up within prescribed process control conditions
*Applies a comprehensive knowledge of a wide variety of machine shop procedures and techniques and high degree of skilled workmanship to drive precise dimensions and close tolerances.
*Selects cutting tools, holding fixtures, machine feeds and speeds, collets and lubricants and gear ratios for all kinds of metals and pieces to be worked.
*Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining
*Must have intimate knowledge of and the ability to interpret complex multi-view mechanical drawings and sketches.
*Uses CAD programs to identify print information when needed

Operations
*Troubleshoots and assists other Tool and Diemakers in resolving technical problems.
*Leads work of several Tool and Diemakers and other workers as necessary.
*Diagnoses and repairs all types of tools and dies and performs machining operations using tool room machines.
*Diagnoses and determines root cause by analyzing die strips, parts, scraps, SPC data and all process inputs.
*Sets up and adjusts dies to meet job book and quality requirements. Operates machines to produce samples for customers.
*Maintains the spare parts inventory for all tooling processes
*Performs precision grinding of all types of metals including carbide. Operates milling machines, lathes, jig grinders and all other tool room machinery. Works consistently to extremely close accuracy and tolerances of .0001 ' or less when required.
*Heat-treats tools and/or parts
*Grinds cutting tools as needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
*High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is and/or 4 years of formal trades training or apprenticeship is required.
*3-4 years' experience in the maintenance, repair and construction of progressive and compound dies , tools, jigs and fixtures or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
*Must have a thorough knowledge of machine tool construction and operations and the use of tools, machine shop practices, and the working qualities of materials.
*Strong manual and spatial dexterity
*Ability to read blueprints and understand diagrams.
*Experience using CAD software is preferred
*Must be highly organized and detail oriented
