St. Mary's Hospital - Ascension
Materials Department - Ground floor
Attire - Black pants some people wear lab jackets but it's not required. It's good to have layers, nothing too restrictive since you will be moving all day. Most importantly is comfortable footwear. I average around 3,000 steps per day.
This is a physical job with bending, lifting boxes, reaching and mostly walking. You will be using a box cutter and breaking down boxes on a daily basis.
Tim will take you to the security desk where your picture will be taken for your badge which allows you access to all of the storerooms and supply rooms.
I recommend parking in the structure because it's free. I tend to park on the 2nd or 3rd level near the entrance. Take the elevator to the second floor where you will have a temperature screen. The lobby is located on the 1st floor. In case Nancy Buesing (pronounced Beezing) isn't there, you can call
and say her name.
The materials department handles all of the supply orders for the hospital. After you have created a login user name and password they will give you a handheld device from which you will be picking and scanning items that have been ordered. This assignment is to cover the lady who will be going on maternity leave this summer.
On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from about 6:30 till 7:30 all of the pallets are unloaded with boxes and packing slips. Everyone starts their own pallet, verifying the number of cases, items and location. All of the boxes are put on the shelves in either stockroom B,C or D. Tuesdays and Thursday mornings is when inventory is counted, I was not shown how to do this. The team goes to their floors supply rooms and does a cart count of the supplies which creates an order. Once those are downloaded in the system then you go to the storeroom and pick the items. After the orders are complete then they can be taken to the supply rooms and put away.
There are printed orders that come into the B room that get distributed into file trays depending what department it is from. There are a few that you can do. Once the order is finished it goes onto a cart in the hallway and either you can deliver it or someone from receiving will take it. They use big plastic bins to put the orders in and these are used to get the items to their department.
One the ground floor is the Garden Cafe' you can buy a hot/cold lunch and beverages. There are also microwaves and vending machines if they are closed. They have the tables and chairs spread out and are constantly cleaning them. There is a small room back by the receiving area where there is a refrigerator and another microwave. There is a locker room if you want to bring a lock to put your belongings in.
