Job Description

Plan and complete project work in the following areas:
  • Development and commercial Introduction of new products for Metalworking and Lubricant Additives markets.
  • Development and commercial introduction of product line extensions for Metalworking and Lubricant Additives markets.
  • Provides Technical Support for the development of new products for Pilot’s Liquid Minerals Group division.
  • Carrying out experiments to generate data for new products, new claims and new applications for Metalworking and Lubricant Additives markets.
  • Writing technical data sheets, white papers and other selling tools for Metalworking and Lubricant Additives markets.
  • Improvement of existing products.
  • Visiting customers and key stakeholders to identify and define all that is new.
  • Plant process development or improvement.
  • Assist Analytical Chemist on new method development as needed.
  • Other tasks as assigned.
DIMENSIONS: ($ responsibilities and numerical values are estimates, based on historic results.)
  • Under general supervision, independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard scientific techniques. procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications.
  • Supports and facilitates transformational change in the focus of the Technology group.
  • Research/review appropriate chemical literature.
  • Manage research project resources in an effective manner.
  • Perform and direct research in a logical, safe, environmentally correct manner.
  • Communicate results, both verbally and in writing, in an effective, timely manner to internal and external customers.
  • Supervise Technicians or other Staff as directed.
  • Be involved in relevant trade and technical associations.
  • Constantly increase knowledge in relevant technical fields.
  • Provide technical support to internal and external customers.
  • Plan and complete other assigned responsibilities.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with the Responsible Care Management System® and ISO 9001 in relevant areas including the establishment of policies and procedures, assigning responsibilities and tracking progress.
  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in chemistry or a Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in general organic synthesis
  • Experience in surfactant manufacture, analysis, and applications
  • Proven track record in new product development, including cooperative ventures with customers
  • Strong instrumental skills (especially GC and HPLC) a plus
  • Proven verbal and written communications skills, including editing review of technical reports.
  • Demonstrated physical manipulative skills needed for general laboratory practices.
  • Good subordinate and peer relationship skills.
  • Successful record of problem solving through analytical and creative thinking skills.
  • Proven quality system skills, including a strong demonstrated belief in continuous improvement.
  • Proven concern with working in a safe and environmentally correct manner.
  • Active in relevant professional or trade organizations, notably STLE.  [For recent graduates, to be demonstrated within one year of joining the company.]
  • Experience in areas of specific interest to Pilot, such as anionic, cationic, amphoteric and nonionic surfactants., etc. is a plus
  • Advanced course work and/or degrees in chemistry or chemical engineering (or a relevant science field).
  • Background in SPC, SQC, ISO 9000, TQM, or other quality management techniques.
  • Successful experience in new product development or technical service.
  • Personal computer skills - word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, database, and on-line search techniques.
  • Market orientation regarding customer service and product development.
