Job Summary:
This role is for a senior engineer in the field of sound and vibration on rotary screw compression modules for oil free and oil flooded products and technologies.   Computational and experimental methods will be applied and conducted through the following key responsibilities:  (1) develop quiet and reliable compressor product designs and (2) solve noise, vibration, stress and/or fluid flow problems with existing products.  Potential focus areas include compressor noise, structural noise transmission and radiation, sound treatment, rotating machinery vibration, structural dynamics and fatigue.  This individual is expected to collaborate in a dynamic and global engineering team leading and supporting new product development and new technology introduction initiatives. 

Responsibilities:  
  • Key engineer for new product development project by providing technical leadership for product development teams, ensuring that the relevant processes are followed.
  • Assist Engineering Manager in all activities to achieve the departmental and organizational goals.
  • Carry out an appropriate combination of sound, vibration, stress and gas/air flow design and verification efforts for rotary screw compressor development projects.
  • Develop and apply computational models for stress, vibration, structural dynamics, sound radiation and flow analysis using finite element (FEA), boundary element (BEA), statistical energy analysis (SEA) and/or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods.
  • Develop next generation quiet compression modules, compressor components (i.e. silencers, dampers, etc.) and compressor systems to match existing and new technologies to market needs and opportunities.
  • Develop technology in application of computational and experimental acoustics and structural dynamics methods to compression module products.
  • Assist designers/drafters with calculations and design, develop test plans, work with laboratory on assembly, installation, and testing, data reductions, documentation and reporting out of key results, make quality observations throughout the development and integrate them appropriately.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of engineering designs, drawings, documentation and BOMs.
  • Oversee DFMEA and DVPR development activities and ensure laboratory and field testing activities adhere to our product development processes.
  • Protect confidential and intellectual property (prepare patent disclosures for example)
  • Continue to build the technical knowledge base of Ingersoll Rand’s Compression Technologies and Services (CTS) engineering departments.
  • Mentor less-experienced engineers, teach engineering problem-solving and analysis skills and provide technical oversight / advice when requested.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Acoustics Engineering or Engineering Mechanics
  • Master’s Degree or PhD in Engineering is a plus

Key Competencies:
  • Knowledge and experience in the design, testing, and optimization of sound, vibration and/or flow characteristics of machinery required, both desired.
  • Self-motivated with strong teamwork, communication, and project management skills required.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the business.
  • Must be able to work on multiple high-priority projects simultaneously.
  • Experience in ANSYS, SYSNOISE, AutoSEA, CFX, LMS, B&K or any similar analytical tool/software.
  • Experience in compressor products and/or rotating equipment is preferred.
  • Strong skills through the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Powerpoint.
