With nearly 7,000 people in 100 offices across the U.S., we partner with our clients to help communities prosper. wsp.com.      The San Francisco, CA office of WSP USA has a current opening for a Traction Power Engineer II to work on and design for different rail projects.  The selected candidate will be expected to perform the following tasks:
  • Facility Power Supply and Distribution Design Engineer for Rail Transit Systems
  • Ensure that company technical policies and procedures are practiced during the execution of projects for clients
  • Project work would include Power Supply and Distribution Design for Light Rail, Heavy Rail, Commuter Rail and High Speed Rail Projects operating on Overhead Contact or Third Rail Systems
  • Utilizes sound electrical engineering practices to develop designs and reports
  • Prepares power system studies for facility LV and HV power supply and distribution systems, LV emergency power and distribution systems, grounding and facility lighting systems
  • Develop and review designs and technical specifications
  • Develop cost estimates and projections
  • Participate in project working meetings
  • Completeness and accuracy of design team work
  • Review shop drawings, record changes and communicate directly with suppliers, contractors and client representatives as required
  • Support the installation and testing of traction power systems components and software
  • Performs site investigations in substations and along railroad tracks
  • Identify construction costs trending out of budget
  • Work location would include both Home Office and short term travel to Cities installing or planning to install Electrified Transit Systems. Long term field assignments are also available


Job Requirements


Education Required:
  • BSCEE / Electrical Engineering Degree preferred
  • EIT preferred 
Experience/Skills Required:
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience of the design, construction, testing and commissioning of Facility Power Supply and Distribution Systems and Equipment, i.e.:
    • AC facility power substations
    • Cable plant
    • Circuit breakers
    • Switchgear
    • Transformers
    • Generators
    • Uninterruptible Power Supplies
    • Control Circuitry
    • SCADA and PLC Protection Systems
    • Lighting
    • Grounding and bonding
    • Underground structures and ductbanks
    • Conduit and cable tray systems
  • Familiarity with Design Drawings and Specifications for Traction Power Supply and Distribution Systems and related equipment
  • Experience working on large transit/railroad, industrial and/or utility projects
  • Knowledge of commercial AC power system analysis software (load flow, short circuit, relay coordination, grounding grid design is a plus
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with others, including multidisciplinary staff in different offices
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
