Summary Statement


Do your career goals include work in government relations or public affairs?  Do you find yourself drawn to news sites and compelled by stories of a political bent?  Have you engaged in a movement to influence legislation?  Put your policy analysis, research and writing skills to use as a Government Affairs Graduate Intern with AARP.




Responsibilities


What You Will Get to Do:

As a Government Affairs Intern, you will impact our priority issues – including retirement security, state sponsored private sector savings initiatives, public pensions, asset and consumer protections, and housing – through your research, knowledge of legislative issues, and passion for economic security for older Americans.  You will be assigned critical tasks and you will get to see your work in action.  You will

  • Conduct research on AARP’s priority issues
  • Analyze existing and proposed policy at the state and/or federal level
  • Evaluate key data and statistics from published research for use in AARP materials
  • Develop recommendations on advocacy issues
  • Produce articles, reports, newsletters and social media content for use by the government relations team both internally and externally



Requirements


You Could Be Our Next Intern if You:

  • Are enrolled in an accredited college or university and have completed 2 full years of coursework prior to the start of the internship
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Are proficient with social media and Microsoft Office applications
  • Exhibit strong organizational and, multi-tasking skills
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written AARP will ask you to submit:
  • A completed online application
  • A copy of your most recent transcript
  • Two letters of reference

All of our intern candidates are subject to a background investigation.
