Job Description

Our mission is to provide creative and scientifically rigorous approaches to answering questions about the human health hazards posed by chemical, biological, pharmaceutical, and radiological agents.

We are currently seeking a senior health scientist (Senior Managing/Principal Scientist) in Food Risk and Safety to lead our Food Safety and Supplement practice. This position offers a stimulating and challenging work environment and significant opportunities for professional growth.

The successful applicant will have successfully executed and managed diverse projects in chemical and microbiological contamination, root cause analysis, risk analysis and corrective actions. Examples of projects include new ingredient risk assessment, food adulteration crisis management, FSMA compliance including HAACP and food safety plan preparation and implementation, microbial risk assessment, and agency negotiation.

Specific activities and responsibilities for this position include:

> Serve as the lead food scientist in the firm responsible for managing the execution of food safety work and business development
> Assist clients with program development, regulatory compliance, auditing, and crisis management
> Manage food science research studies such as evaluations of health substantial claims or safety
> Work with our corporate business development team to lead client development activities within the food safety practice area
> Plan and attend meetings with prospective clients, identify business opportunities, and prepare proposals
> Publish and present study findings in peer reviewed literature and at scientific conferences
> Evaluate current food science literature and regulatory developments to determine market opportunities
> Provide strategic consulting and, if appropriate, testimony as an expert witness in litigation
> Work with, manage, and/or mentor multi-disciplinary staff of health scientists including engineers toxicologists, industrial hygienists and epidemiologists

Job Requirements

Qualifications for this position include:

> MS or PhD in chemistry, biology, toxicology, or a food-science related field
> 10 to 15 years of professional experience
> Subject matter expert in food science principles, including GMP, hazard analysis, exposure assessment, toxicology, risk-based preventive controls, monitoring, corrective actions, verification, food allergens, and auditing
> Experience evaluating indirect additives used in food packaging or processing
> Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) training, or equivalent
> Knowledge in ingredient and food standards and FDA food labeling regulations
> Experience with working with or participating in trade associations
> Innovation and leadership to direct junior health scientists in the growth of the food science practice
> Familiarity with FDA, USDA and EPA regulatory agencies and practices
> Experience presenting research findings in academic/peer-reviewed settings and at professional meetings
> Excellent verbal and written communication skills
> Strong organizational skills and ability to balance time among multiple assignments
> Strong quantitative and qualitative research skills
> Ability to work independently or in multidisciplinary teams
> Experience as a professor, or experience working in industry, insurance, CDC, USDA, NIEHS, FDA, or NIH is a plus
