The Carlisle Group has been retained to search for an Executive Director for a non-profit organization in Harrisburg, PA. Our client was founded in 1939 by a local church in Harrisburg. They are part of national organization that founded in 1860 and has hundreds of clubs all over the United States. They serve approximately 1,500 children in the Harrisburg area. Their mission is to serve as a neighborhood based organization committed to serving youth of all backgrounds in developing self-esteem and character and to help them become responsible citizens by providing physical, recreational, social, educational and vocational programs..

The Executive Director is responsible for managing the operation of the Club, including the engagement of donors and volunteers, for the direct benefit of its members (the kids!) and in support of the organizational mission and goals. The Executive Director collaborates with the Board of Directors in strategic planning, developing organizational goals, attaining/allocating resources, and establishing policies and priorities. The Executive Director is responsible for the overall performance of the Club including resource development, operations, and safety.


  • Leadership: Lead a team of staff, board members, volunteers, donors, and community partners to ensure the consistent quality of the Club’s performance in the execution of its mission.
  • Resource Development & Fundraising: Directly responsible for the leadership and management of the resource development and fundraising function of the Club to fund its $1.3 million annual operating budget with a 2-3 year goal to double the budget to $2.6 million. Engage donors and prospective donors in the areas of individual giving, corporate giving and grants, and special events. A strategic vision for growing resources and delivering on outcomes, relationship management and consistent engagement of stakeholders are critical responsibilities.
  • Strategic Planning: Directly responsible for the execution of the Club’s strategic plan developed collaboratively with the Club’s executive management team and Board of Directors.
  • Marketing, Communications, and Brand Management: The Executive Director is the face of the Club, responsible for setting the vision and shaping the message of the impact of the Club on members and how support from community partners is helping to accomplish positive outcomes. Responsible for public relations, outreach, and external communications.
  • Financial Management/Risk Management: Manage and monitor the operating budget and responsibility for required non-profit reporting requirements internally and externally in coordination with the Club’s outside service providers and staff. Direct responsibility for compliance with state and organizational standards and clearances.
  • Staff Management: Responsible for the hiring, supervision, and mentorship of Club management, staff members, and volunteers. Includes delegation as appropriate the authority to direct/manage program activities to the Director of Programs and operational activities to the Director of Operations.
  • Members and Programs: The Boys and Girls of Harrisburg has a motto; “The Kids Come First". The Executive Director is the leader of the organization which includes the relationship with its members, the kids. Responsible for expanding the reach of the Club programs to enable more children to be served and impacted by the programs of the Club.


The Executive Director will report to the Board of Directors and will establish performance objectives and expected outcomes in accordance with the above expectations and details of the job description. These objectives are dynamic and will be revised from time to time to the mutual agreement of the Executive Director and Board of Directors.

Education, Skills and Knowledge Required

  • A minimum of bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in leading successful fundraising programs and operations in a non-profit agency; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of: the mission, objectives, policies, programs and procedures
  • Proven experience in successful execution of the principles and practices of managing non-profit or for-profit organizations.
  • Ability to instill a strong tone at the top through strategic vision, innovation, and consistent execution of continuous improvement initiatives to maximize the potential of the staff and positive impact of programs on members.
  • Proven success in resource development and fundraising activities including but not limited to: identification of new sources of funding, ability to manage the cultivation and engagement of donors and volunteers; and steward resources effectively to achieve outcomes.
  • Leadership and team building skills, including negotiation, problem solving, decision-making, succession planning and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong financial skills, including experience with budget management and reporting.
  • An ability to analyze complex financial information and create relevant reports and actionable recommendations for the Board of Directors.
  • Basic knowledge of asset management including financial resources and property.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Board of Directors, staff, community groups, and other related agencies.
