Position: LRT Systems Maintenance Technician

Reports To: Systems Maintenance Supervisor
Hourly Wage: $24.45
LRT Systems Maintenance Technicians perform a variety of assignments related to overhead lines, supporting structures, substations, signal & communications and electrical/mechanical facility amenities. Employees working this position must possess a Class “B" VA Driver’s License. LRT Maintenance Technicians use standard shop and lineman tools, power tools, chain saws, diagnostic and test equipment, forklift trucks, company vehicles, special work vehicles with lifting platforms and buckets, etc. This includes installing, troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining and performing scheduled maintenance on traction power substations, Train Control Systems and related components with the inspection, maintenance, repair, installation and alteration of all Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems and amenities while ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the LRT system.
Essential Job Functions:

Install, maintain, repair and replace overhead lines, supporting structures, signal & communications, and facility electrical/mechanical amenities along entire alignment, including but not limited to area lighting, rail switch machines, high/low voltage switch gear, HVAC, plumbing, and fire detection/prevention systems.
Performs LRT systems maintenance in assessing factors and conditions affecting maintenance/service activities and responding appropriately when these change and keep all interested and involved parties informed of matters requiring attention.
Adheres to the highest quality standards while meeting original equipment manufacturer’s requirement in the performance of all job responsibilities.
Follow all safety procedures and standard practices to ensure maintenance activities precede safely and efficiently.
Performs inspections of LRT systems including but not limited to overhead contact wire systems, traction power substations, building electrical/mechanical, signal, communications and other elements related to maintaining a safe operating light rail system. Submits verbal and written reports of inspection findings to the LRT Systems Supervisor. Recommends and executes immediate maintenance remedial action in maintaining safe, efficient and reliable LRT service.
Communicates effectively with the LRT Systems Supervisor the results of LRT systems maintenance activities, and other relative information and to other Hampton Roads Transit personnel as necessary.
Monitors, identifies and corrects imminent safety hazards for Hampton Roads Transit total LRT rail system. Investigates, analyzes, and makes recommendations for correcting potential safety problems.
Coordinate with contracted efforts by explaining problems and assisting contractors and Hampton Roads Transit personnel in such activities. Assist with review, and acceptance/rejection of work performance by contractors. Communicates progress of all LRT systems work activities.
Assist in training other Hampton Roads Transit employees in the safe and efficient performance of LRT system maintenance and proper operation of required rail system maintenance equipment/tooling.
Assist rail operations when needed through manually operating substation, signal communications and other LRT support equipment/systems when needed to facilitate safe, efficient and reliable LRT service for the riding public.
Maintain the cleanliness of work area, substation, signal, communications and electro/mechanical facilities interior and the immediate exterior areas.
Respond to emergency service needs.
Operate On Track Equipment and other maintenance equipment as required to perform maintenance activities
Manage records created and received in compliance with the Hampton Roads Transit Records Management Policy and Procedures.
Responsible for maintaining a general awareness of HRT’s EMS
Responsible for handling all related job responsibilities in accordance to HRT’s Environmental Policy, relevant EMS Standard Operating Procedures, and Emergency Management Plan

Required Knowledge, Abilities and
Skills Essential to Job Functions:

Ability to perform maintenance repair, troubleshooting, rebuilds and
overhaul of LRT systems equipment and materials.
Ability to analyze malfunctions in electronic, microcomputer, mechanical,
pneumatic, hydraulic, electric equipment and determines repair and performs
system fabrication and assembly tasks.
Knowledge of technical math skills.
Ability to maintain accurate records and correctly use test equipment
(voltmeter, ammeter, ohmmeter, oscilloscope, computer bases instruments, meggar,
wire tracer and other equipment as required).
Knowledge of hardware/software configuration/troubleshooting, and
networking protocols and configuration is essential.
Work experience and knowledge in demonstrating the ability to diagnosis,
repair, preventive maintenance and service in one or more of the following
systems, LRT traction power including Overhead Catenary System, Substations,
Signals, and facilities power distribution/building maintenance
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Ability to manage multiple responsibilities/priorities
Must meet established Hampton Roads Transit goals and work
Knowledge of and experience with electric/mechanical maintenance safety
practices as they pertain to rail transportation systems.
Keep updated with current laws, regulations, and developments in areas
related to maintenance operations and maintenance.
Knowledge of methods and procedures used to repair and maintain high and
low voltage electrical switch-gear equipment
Knowledge of theory and principles of traction power, substation, signal,
facility power distribution electrical and electronic equipment and
Knowledge of principles and practices of electrical
Knowledge of laws, ordinances, and regulations covering electrical
installation, maintenance safety and accident prevention.
Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications,
electronic schematics, electrical and electromechanical schematics and

Skills essential to Job Functions:
Proficiency in using computer systems and the
listed software applications associated with performance of assigned work is
essential. Basic problem solving skills associated with software applications

Training/Education and/or Required
High School Diploma or GED Six (6) years of directly related
industry or trade experience. Journeyman/Lineman electrical trade experience or
Six (6) years rail vehicle technician experience within the past three (3)
A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to
the criterion listed above and satisfies the knowledge, skills, and abilities
requirements will also be considered.
Must have CDL Class B license and/or CDL permit
and the ability to acquire within sixty (60) days of employment a valid Virginia
CDL Class B license with air brake and passenger endorsements.
Ability to pass DOT physical examination.
Pass HRT Skills assessment(s) with a minimum 80% score for each
Ability to successfully complete Rail Track Equipment
Training/Certification Program and rail vehicle equipment training. Must
complete training and demonstrate proficiency in light rail vehicle
Must meet ongoing educational, training and DOT requirements and maintain
On Track Equipment Certification.
