Summary

The Shim lab at the Glendale campus of Midwestern University is currently seeking a Research Assistant for an NIH-funded research project (R15CA246429, Cyclooxygenase-2 signaling in cell senescence and its role in chemotherapy-induced long-term adverse sequelae). This three-year position is non-renewable. This position requires experience with mouse colony management and maintenance. The selected candidate will be responsible for maintaining mammalian cell lines, conducting molecular biology assays, and performing histological analysis. The position reports to the Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics.


The position will include the following duties:

  • Performs wide variety of standard research procedures under supervision of Principal Investigator (Dr. Minsub Shim) and follows established procedures and protocols
  • Tracks results, compiles data using appropriate formats and graphs, and analyzes data with training and supervision
  • Keeps an accurate lab notebook
  • Adheres to laboratory safety procedures
  • Assists in standard maintenance of the lab
  • Obtains quotes and performs ordering and receiving duties for lab supplies
  • Organizes and maintains supply and stocks adequately lab items
  • Contributes to manuscript submissions and poster preparation
  • Maintains mouse colonies and microbial and tissue cultures for experiments

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

  • Ability to learn and train others in laboratory techniques, and work independently
  • Candidates with prior experience in microbial and tissue culture, Western blotting, qRT-PCR, subcloning, lentiviral and adeno-associated viral expression systems, histology (H&E), and mouse handling and maintenance are especially encouraged to apply

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree in the life sciences (biology, biochemistry, molecular biology or related field) is required. 0-2 years of previous research-related experience is required.


Computer Skills

Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).


Language Skills

Intermediate skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.


Reasoning Skills

Intermediate skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.


Mathematical Skills

Intermediate skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
