Project Accountant

Basic Function: The Project Accountant position is accountable for monitoring the progress of assigned projects, investigating related variances, analyzing and approve coding per associated job costs, monitoring and completing the assigned project’s cost report, and ensuring that project payments are issued to customers and billings collected while tracking required lien waivers and bank requested documents.

Principal Accountabilities:

  1. Create project accounts in the accounting system

  2. Maintain project-related records, including contracts and change orders

  3. Approve and review project payables through workflow

  4. Authorize the recording of expenses versus capitalized costs per project

  5. Review and approve vendor invoices related to a project

  6. Review and approve overhead/general admin charges to be applied to a project

  7. Review account totals related to project assets, job costs and expenses monthly

  8. Investigate project variances and submit variance reports to management

  9. Report on project profitability to management per monthly cost reports

  10. Report to management on any opportunities for back charges

  11. Report to management regarding the remaining funding available for projects

  12. Create and submit all draw requests internally and externally to cover project funding

  13. Respond to requests for more detail from vendors and track down unsubmitted billings

  14. Close out project accounts upon project completion

  15. Prepare internal financial statements by analyzing general ledger accounts

  16. Analyze project budgets by developing spreadsheet reports and reviewing costs and commitments against approved fiscal year budget

  17. Prepare general ledger entries by maintaining records and files; reconciling accounts

  18. Prepare cashflow by accruing estimated costs; track vendor billings, forecast monthly payables; request disbursements; reconcile bank and loan accounts

  19. Develop and implement accounting procedures by analyzing current procedures; recommend changes

  20. Answer accounting and financial questions related to assigned projects through research

  21. Provide accounting support when needed by reviewing financial information; convert data to general ledger system; obtain supplementary information

  22. Protect organization’s value by keeping information confidential

  23. Create and submit government reports and tax returns related to projects

  24. Compile information for internal and external auditors, as required

  25. Accomplish accounting and organization mission by completing related results
