The employee performs a full range of professional health care practitioner assignments as a Physician Assistant/NP in a full-functioning capacity. Considerable independent judgment is used to make decisions in carrying out assignments that have significant impact on services or programs. Guidelines may be available, but require adaptation or interpretation to determine appropriate courses of action.

Ability to perform medical assessment and formulate/implement plan of care.


Perform pre and post-operative patient and family education.


Prescribe medication, including controlled substances in accordance with the written practice agreement and or protocol of the supervising physician.


Orders and interprets laboratory and radiographic studies.


Performs postoperative incisional care including dressing changes.


Performs removal of chest tubes, central lines, temporary pacemaker wires, sutures, staples and surgical drains.


Assist the physician with the removal of Intra-Aortic balloon pump.




Demonstrates accuracy, attention to detail and effectiveness in completion of work.


Exhibits dependability, availability and conscientiousness in performing work and in willingness to accept responsibilities.


Collaborates with Cardiology, Nephrology, Infectious Disease and other specialties on complex patients.





Occasional hospital rounding on the weekend.


Provides in service/continuing education to all hospital personnel involved in the care of the cardiovascular/thoracic surgical patient.


Regularly attends continuing education seminars to update knowledge and improve skills.

Supports instructional programs for other health team members.    









Baccalaureate education required.  Bachelor of Science preferred.


Masters in Nurse Practitioner program.




Demonstrated clinical competency.


Personal Qualifications:      

Communicates clearly in English, oral and written.  



Board certified by governing body (NP).
