Position: Substation Engineer

Duration: 06+ Months (Higher Extension possibilities)

Location: Allentown, PA 18104


Job Description:

  • This position is for a Relay Settings Engineer for day to day support of Distribution Operations grid relays.
  • This includes programming SCADA systems, particularly remote terminal units as well as server based applications, such as Subnet Substation Server.
  • Position will also analyze system events on the 12 kV distribution system including symmetrical component analysis.
  • They will be analyzing 3 phase power systems and working knowledge of basic components like vacuum circuit reclosers, sectionalizers, capacitor banks, high voltage fuse coordination, etc.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience with Protection Settings and/or Transmission Settings at a major utility.
  • This position is for a highly motivated engineer who can manage their own work. Experience on relay protection settings with Electric Utility and/or Consulting Firm and with setting SEL relays and GE relays is preferred.  
  • Preferred candidate is knowledgeable about NERC CIP standards. 
  • All experience levels will be considered for this position.

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of power components as it applies to 12kV utility systems. 
  • Knowledge of SEL relays and .RDB files. How to read/send files to relays.
  • Ability to program in languages such as C, C++, C#, Python, etc.
  • Possess the ability to identify network problems and recommend improvements to ensure optimal performance
  • Basic understanding of IP addressing (IPv4) and Subnetting.
  • Possess the ability to develop and maintain technical documentation including design documents, test plans, project plans, procedures, incident reports and troubleshooting guidelines.
  • LAN/WAN topologies.
  • Strong Verbal and Written Communication skills.  Understanding of 3-part communication preferred.
  • Able to support storm efforts as needed based on the Windsor Storm Team role.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the automation team
