Our client, a world leading Pharmaceutical Company in Groton, CT is currently looking for a Animal Technician to join their expanding team.

Position Details:

  • Job Title: Animal Technician
  • Duration: 12 months contract, extendable up to 18 months

Job Description:

  • The primary role will provide surgical technical research services to the GST Surgery Team directly supporting the research protocols, working in partnership with research staff members and Comparative Medicine staff in the conduct of biomedical research.
  • Provide veterinary surgical technical support including, but not limited to: pre, peri and postoperative care, anesthesia and recovery.
  • Perform anesthesia with and without immediate oversight of investigator or veterinarian
  • Basic and advanced anesthesia and analgesia protocols
  • Multi-species surgical technical support (e.g. animal handling and restraint, aseptic surgical preparation, pre-, peri-, and post-operative observations, anesthesia, venous catheter placement, administer injections, intubation and assist with research procedures as directed).
  • Maintenance of surgical suite in ready capacity
  • Develop and maintain surgical packs to match procedures
  • Develop surgical and maintenance procedures for the surgical suite
  • Maintenance of surgical, and anesthetic equipment
  • Set up operating rooms for procedures
  • Establishes and maintains accurate, thorough and detailed records of animal surgery and care.
  • Organizes and restocks operative and other necessary supplies.

Orders supplies for surgery, including:

  • Develop and maintain system for ordering/reorder limits
  • Develop and maintain system for reviewing expiration dates.
  • Inspects anesthesia machines (tubing, valves, and oxygen) and ensures calibration is completed annually.
  • Creates, maintains, and archives Equipment including appropriate documentation for surgical equipment on an annual basis as necessary
  • Ability to radiograph as required for surgical or study supportPosition is within Pfizer Comparative Medicine Groton Global Science and Technology group and will include extensive interaction within this group, the local Comparative Medicine Department colleagues. Close collaboration with Research Unit and Partner Line colleagues at Groton, plus interactions with Global Science and Technology colleagues at other Pfizer sites

Education, Experience, Skills:

  • Experience: (1-4)years experience performing veterinary technical and surgical/anesthesia procedures required
  • Experience in a research environment experience preferred+
  • Certification/Licensure: Veterinary Technician required
  • Preferred: SRA, SRT or SRS certifications preferred +
  • Certification at the LAT level preferred +
  • AALAS certification at the Assistant Technician level (ALAT) will also be considered in conjunction with experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for this specific education and experience listed above.
  • Ability to provide multimodal anesthesia, multi-species surgical technical support, and quality standard practice in veterinary care
  • Ability to interpret and assess anesthesia monitoring parameters ( Heart rate, blood pressure, partial oxygen concentration, capnography, electrocardiogram and temperature) and utilze the parameter to effectively and safely maintain the surgical plane of anesthesia
  • Specialized nursing duties – phlebotomy, intravenous catheter placement, intubation, radiography, aseptic preparation, aseptic technique, cyctocentesis, urinary catheterization, and basic dental procedures.
  • Physical Position requirements:
  • Ability to lift, stand, walk, bend and sit
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations
  • Ability to make critical decisions (anesthetic related)
  • Ability to make quick and precise adjustments to anesthetic and related surgical support equipment
  • Working with nonhuman primates are included in the job responsibilities. A pre-hire requirement is either providing proof of measles immunity or receiving the measles vaccination before hire
