The Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking a highly motivated Managing Director for the Illinois Quantum Information Science and Technology Center (IQUIST). IQUIST's mission is to explore applied quantum information science, thereby bringing world-changing technologies, a cutting-edge workforce, and new industries to the state and to the world. IQUIST seeks to accelerate quantum information science (QIS) research on the Urbana campus through collaborations across physics, electrical and computer engineering, computer science, math, and other engineering disciplines; and to build new educational programs to better equip a future QIS-smart workforce. Reporting to the IQUIST Director, the Managing Director will develop and execute the financial, managerial, and administrative functions of the Illinois Quantum Information Science and Technology Center (IQUIST). The individual's job responsibilities include: 

  • Manage and nurture the IQUIST program by executing the overall program strategy and coordinating center activities and milestones in collaboration with IQUIST leadership.
  • Collaborate, foster, and manage partnerships with key stakeholders. Maintain and expand relationships with the Chicago Quantum Exchange (CQE) by participating in working groups and cross-center opportunities.
  • Host and coordinate meetings, seminars, student training programs.
  • Broadly oversee research program performance, research team development, proposal production and submission, and site visits of funding agencies. 
  • Assist with proposal and grant management including gathering information, organizing submissions, interfacing with collaborators on inter-institutional submissions, scheduling meetings, supporting outreach activities, and coordinating reporting requirements.
  • Facilitate the creation of new undergraduate and graduate programs in quantum information science and engineering.
  • Expand and strengthen research and development programs through industrial contacts, state and other governmental bodies, university administrators and the science community at large. Identify and coordinate new federal funding and corporate partnership opportunities.
  • Explore, institute and manage programs for outreach to industry, schools and the public. 
  • Oversee annual fundraising efforts including coordinating meetings with companies and donors.
  • Track and advise on annual expenditures including developing and executing an annual budget, and reviewing and approving long-term financial forecasts.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of a website and coordinate a media presence for IQUIST.
  • Supervise support staff, including work assignment and performance management.
  • Ability to occasionally travel to various locations in the U.S. to attend meetings, conferences, or workshops. This includes occasional overnight trips and non-standard hours of work.
  • Perform other related managing director duties as assigned.
  • Use independent judgement and decision making to proactively identify issues and make recommendations for solutions that impact the successful execution of the IQUIST's mission.

Job Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Training, Knowledge):

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or related field. 
  • Three years of managerial and administrative experience with major research centers or similar university, non-profit, government, or industrial unit.
  • Three years demonstrated experience involving a collaborative, multidisciplinary research team.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience. 
  • Strong proficiency in all forms of communication and ability to be a team player.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of constituents.
  • Ability to create and deliver concise and informative presentations.
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail. 
  • Proven analytical and project management skills.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Training, Knowledge):

  • Master's or PhD in a science or engineering field. 
  • Four years of managerial and administrative experience with a major research center or similar university, non-profit, government, or industrial unit.
  • Four years of demonstrated experience involving a collaborative, multidisciplinary research team.
  • Knowledge of University guidelines and procedures for general accounting, proposal processing, and grant administration.
  • Strong background in accounting principles and sponsored research pre-and post-award administration.
  • Direct experience in the coordination of research funding proposals.
  • Proven financial management skills. 
  • Demonstrated management experience with scientific programs.
  • Familiarity with higher education environment.
  • Illinois Certified Research Administrator.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
