Founded in 1975, Eden began as a small, family-oriented school for individuals with autism and today offers classes from pre-K through age 21. In addition, Eden provides services for adults with autism including residential and employment programs, as well as providing clinical and training support for families and professionals.


We have an exciting career opportunity for a Speech and Language Specialist (12 months position) who will provide speech and language services to individuals with autism within The Eden School to include: assessment, diagnosis, goal selection, training and intervention. Primary Responsibilities

The Eden School

  • Implement program objectives for students as assigned by Lead Speech Specialist and assist with staff supervision.
  • Implement behavior support education programs as defined in each student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
  • Manage maladaptive behaviors including tantrums, self-injury, and aggression.
  • Evaluate each student’s speech and language program through the use of data collection, standardized and teacher prepared assessment devices.
  • Maintain daily preparation of task(s) and materials.
  • In conjunction with Lead Speech Specialist, evaluate students’ speech and language needs.
  • Define objectives for remediation of speech and language deficits for each student through development of short- and long-term goals.

· Work with Behavior Specialist and classroom Lead Teachers to develop appropriate alternate teaching programs for students.

  • Perform speech and language re-evaluations as per district guidelines.
  • Responsible for implementing and tracking monthly discussion groups pertaining to topics in the field of speech language pathology.
  • Responsible for tracking hours using SEMI forms and faxing these forms monthly to the appointed SEMI coordinators at each student’s sending district.

Report Writing

  • Prepare reports with detailed analysis of progress and deficit areas regarding the goals outlined within the Individualized Family Service Plans and submit to the NJ Department of Human Services Service Coordinator.
  • Quarterly progress reports for caseload managed at the Eden School.
  • Develop and maintain updated IEPs according to outlined schedule provided by the Director of Educational Services.

Communication with Staff and Parents

  • Attend meetings with the Director of Speech and Language Services and the Lead Speech Specialist as scheduled.
  • Attend and participate in program staff meetings.
  • Maintain good working rapport with families, colleagues and community members.
  • Provide progress updates during IFSP and IEP meetings with regard to each child’s speech and language goals.
  • Attend and participate in weekly speech and language staff and program staff meetings.
  • Attend and participate in student staffing meetings twice a year for each student in the assigned program.
  • Assist program supervisor in special duties such as lunch, bus coverage, etc.
  • Work cooperatively with student speech teachers assigned to the program, and assist supervising teacher and therapists with speech and language program for each student as assigned.
  • Communicate speech programming to parents during parent conferences/IEPs.
  • Work with home training personnel in establishing continuity between home and school regarding speech and language programs.
  • Maintain weekly communication with parents concerning progress and recommendations for home maintenance.
  • Build collaborative relationship with all staff members.


  • Attend mandatory in-service trainings provided throughout the year.
  • Assist Lead Speech Specialist with in-service trainings as required.
  • Maintain continuing education credits as outlined by the American Speech Language and Hearing Association to maintain the Certificate of Clinical Competence.
  • Maintain continuing education credits as outlined by the New Jersey Audiology and Speech Language Pathology Advisory Committee to maintain New Jersey licensure.

Education:  Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology; Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology (CCC-SLP); licensed by the State of New Jersey.


Experience:  2 years’ experience working with individuals with speech and language disorders, preferably with autism.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, squat, kneel, stretch, stoop, and/or reach above shoulder level for extended periods of time (up to 30 minutes) during the work day.
  • Vision requirements to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to pass and maintain Professional Crisis Management (PCM) certification at a P2 level on an annual basis, including implementation of all strategies and techniques.
  • Ability to move or be moved freely and quickly to ensure the safety of students/participants at all times.  

 Specialized Skills and Knowledge:

·         Competent in applied behavior analysis; familiar with behavior and teaching methodologies.

·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

·         Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.

·         Strong organizational skills, with attention to detail to ensure accuracy.

·         Demonstrated ability to solve problems, exercise independent judgment, and make appropriate decisions based on established policies and procedures.

·         Ability to deal with confidential information.

·         Ability to work independently, as well as work as a member of a team.

·         Model high performance culture and attributes.

·  Ability to take direction and think through processes and procedures, and make recommendations for improvement as necessary to ensure a smooth operation.

·         Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

·         Skilled in the evaluation and remediation of speech and language disorders with preschool and school-aged children.

·         Ability to understand the needs of the individuals served and advocate on their behalf.

·         Support families and staff in order to enhance the lives of the individuals we serve.

·         Ability to travel on a daily basis including daytime, afternoon, evenings and weekends.
