Job Description

Controller

 

As Controller for the PATH Foundation, you will report to the CFO and lead a team of two. In this newly created role, you will ensure that all monthly closings are timely, and ensure that our financial reporting is transparent, accurate and useful. You will serve as the main point of contact for internal staff questions regarding financial matters, working closely with budget managers across the organization to develop and manage a rapidly growing portfolio of work. The PATH Foundation is committed to honoring the legacy of community philanthropy by being good stewards of the foundation’s assets. It is expected that you will continue our history of full transparency and clean audits as you meticulously manage all aspects of accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting for our $250 million private foundation.

 

You will play a pivotal role in shaping our financial infrastructure, working with the CFO to evaluate new accounting, budgeting, and fixed assets systems and leading the project to implement these systems into our current practices and workflows ‑ serving as the main point of contact for vendors and colleagues as you evaluate system capabilities and work with colleagues to understand requirements, implement the system, and provide training for how to utilize the system for increased transparency across the organization.

Responsibilities of the Controller

  • Accounting: Oversee the Payroll, Accounts Payable and Account Receivable functions. Oversee Staff Accountant function to ensure procedures are followed, proper records are maintained an adequate internal controls and financial procedures are in place. Collect data for our annual tax return. Collect data and align staff to prepare for audits.
  • Budgeting: Manage the annual budgeting process. Work with colleagues to develop and maintain budgets; monitor progress and changes and keep colleagues abreast of the organization’s financial status. Support colleagues across the organization with financial questions and concerns.
  • External relationships: In consultation with the CFO, manage the employee insurance, benefits, business insurance plans, and banking relationship. As needed, represent the organization to financial partners, including financial institutions, investment manager, tax professionals and auditors, and oversee the management of leases, contracts, and other financial commitments.
  • Financial stewardship: Assist the CFO with cash, investment, and asset management. Manage organizational cash flow planning and forecasting to ensure availability of funds as needed; develop and utilize forward-looking, predictive models and activity-based financial analyses to provide insight into the organization’s operations and business plans.
  • Internal operations: Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures. Enhance and/or develop, implement and enforce policies and systems that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the organization.
  • Monthly reporting: Oversee monthly account closing process and conduct balance sheet reconciliations. Generate timely and accurate monthly financials and reports for department and executive leaders.
  • Staff Management: Provide strategic leadership and guidance to a team of two finance professionals. Grow, mentor, and coach staff to ensure productivity and employee satisfaction. Foster a sense of cohesiveness across the team.
  • System implementation: Evaluate system options for upgrading from QuickBooks. Lead the process for requirements planning, vendor selection, system evaluation and testing, implementation, and staff training.

Job Requirements

Qualifications of the Controller

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or a related business field. Advanced degree or CPA preferred, but not required.
  • 8+ years of applicable financial experience including monthly closings, reporting, reconciliations, cash flow analysis, billing, budgeting, payroll, and forecasting.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), finance systems, and MS Office. Skilled in policy/procedure development.
  • Strong understanding of non-profits, philanthropy and healthcare is preferred.
  • Supervisory experience. Experience managing, building, and/or growing a team of financial professionals.
  • A history of clean audits.
  • Experience with operational efficiency projects and/or system upgrades is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and initiatives simultaneously and seamlessly with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work creatively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards.
