  • The ideal candidate would be a hands-in HVAC professional with experience supervising other technicians (union & nonunion) who wants to progress their career in to management
  • Looking for someone with hands-on experience troubleshooting HVAC systems; this person will be the point person for technical issues and must be able to talk to less experienced Technicians over the phone to walk them thru the troubleshooting process to fix / repair HVAC and/or other building systems.
  • Will be supervising / overseeing 14 Technicians at multiple locations in Cambridge (completing work orders, responding to / troubleshooting alarms, system repairs & maintenance, etc.)
  • Should be familiar with Building Automation Systems (Johnson Controls mainly & Siemens); HVAC License preferred but extensive experience is acceptable


Overall supervision of the engineering department within the facility assigned. These duties include but are not limited to the installation, repair and maintenance of the facility equipment. The oversight and upkeep of the physical plant, including grounds, utility services, HVAC, plumbing, electrical system, electronic equipment, yard and pavement upkeep in the best manner possible for the safety and health of all concerned, and to coordinate these activities as needed. Responsible for the support of implementation and documentation of site safety plans and all Company operational standards and guidelines as well as site specific standards, policies and procedures relating to the site and engineering department.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides supervision and is responsible for the support of implementation of all preventive maintenance and repair operations at the facility.
  • Direct or participate in various facility programs and committees relating to assigned responsibilities such as safety, disaster, fire, pollution control and civil defense.
  • Formulates, recommends and could implement site specific policies and procedures to improve the facility physical plant and operations.
  • Develops a plan and/or procedure for controlling, labeling, recording estimated life expectancy, maintenance and inspecting all capital and non-capital equipment within the facility. This plan includes a long-term engineering capital plan.
  • Recommends equipment purchases to replace obsolete equipment items and provide assistance in formulating long-range equipment replacement requirements and coordinates actions with contractors.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of operating and extraordinary expense budgets as required.
  • Plans and schedules services of department. Establishes standards and work methods; takes steps to assure quality and quantity of performance, and evaluates results. Establishes plans for improving departmental work emphasizing efficiency and economy.
  • Communicates policies and procedures, discusses job problems, and employee concerns with supervisors and employees. Encourages development of habits and behavior for improved performance and good employee contributions. Direct, train, evaluate, and co- counsel all engineering personnel, after approved by Director of Operations.
  • Ensures that general safety, fire prevention regulations are enforced, and safe working habits are promoted throughout the facility. Ensures that all shop equipment is properly maintained and conforms to safety standards. Promotes good housekeeping principles and supervises housekeeping details.
  • Maintains an on-going self-improvement program to keep abreast of new equipment, standards, codes, and maintenance procedures; also sets and maintains a professional work environment for staff.
  • Works with Engineering Manager on site / tenant related issues.
  • Ensures standards of services and commitment; ensures compliance with safe practices and standards.
  • Develops goals for staff, builds morale with a team approach and supports growth opportunities and potential
  • Complies with employment laws and company employment practices.

Skills / Education / Experience:

  • 10+ years progressive operations experience with a BA/BS in engineering, facilities management or related field; extensive relevant experience may be considered in replace of degree.
  • Technical and hands-on-experience in the following disciplines: HVAC, electrical, plumbing and other building support systems including but not limited to fire/life safety systems and security.
  • HVAC License preferred; High-rise Fire Safety certification, Haz-Mat Certification, Indoor Air Quality Certification, and LEED Certification a plus.
  • Building Automation Systems experience required; use mainly Johnson Controls (mainly) and Siemens
  • Strong employee relation skills, coaching skills and training skills.
  • BOMA accredited courses desirable.
  • Must have very good communication skills (oral & written), with great follow-up habits, and be able to multi-task several priorities at once while delivering a high-level product to all customers.
  • Computer skills with ability to work with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience supervising / managing 24/7 operations with both union and non-union staffs is a plus.
